Aww bless, have you been waiting to do this for a while?

Doesn't quite work though... have another go later maybe?

Just quoting you Michael, actually I agree with your original posting.

Oh yes, I know you are quoting me, just slightly out of context at present and without any real impact, as I said it might work later though so keep an eye on things ;)

Glad we are in agreement on the original post though... although I'm not sure I actually meant it in anything more than a very tongue in cheek way so don't quote me on it ;)

It just so happened his post followed a link to an story of interest, not just a random statement about women not being able to vote.

Charlotte, that thread was obviously 'tongue in cheek' Oh and you never did get back to me re: your 'breeding' reply :):)

It does say that the idea can work both ways though - that employers can choose whether to employ one over the other.

Nobody's listening. The opening paragraph has activated the "It's -PC-gone-mad-I-tell-you" program, which, once executed, can only be halted by a night's sleep or a thread about Top Gear.

What was the question?

Well I've 'morphed' the avatars and the results don't look too promising, sorry !

:offtopic:

Anyway, lets be honest with each other, discrimination, be it Race, ability or sex are a key if not vital aspects of certain jobs.

One 'ism that is grossy undervalued is 'Pragmatism'

It's lucky I didn't go for this one then...

Indeed - its a non-story: employers, choose the right person for the job, be it man, woman, living or dead!

They would increase fairness and diversity and help Britain compete in the global economy by being more open, she told MPs.

"A society which is equal and fair is one which is more at ease with itself," she added.

The plans would also bring together all previous discrimination law into a single piece of legislation which she said would cut red tape for business.

Allowing positive discrimination would help organisations such as the police better reflect the communities they serve by recruiting more female and ethnic minority officers, said Ms Harman

Socialism looks OK on paper and as theoretical concept, but it cannot ever succeed when faced with human nature and the fact that we are not and never will be created equal, there will always be leaders and followers, there will always be different levels of ability and there will always be different levels of need. The Utopian dream of one size fits all doesn't exist and hopefully we will soon see the end of this mad experiment and will return to the natural order of letting the best person for the job GET the job!!!

At the end of the day if 15 people apply for 1 job (be it in the Police as in the example or Fire Service or where ever) I would be happy knowing that the best applicant got the job, and not the one that was needed to 'balence the books'!!!

But if, for example, a headmistress wanted to discriminate in favour of a male teacher to balance an all female team that would be allowed too.

And as for letting women breast feed in public........

To put it in a nutshell cliche, life is not fair. Anyone who disagrees - it's true, accept it because you can't change it.

She said firms should be able to choose a woman over a man of equal ability if they wanted to - or vice versa.
Seems to me that firms will be able to positively discriminate in favour of men over women too. So what's her point?

I think the point is that at the moment if either a man or a woman or a member of a particular race feels that they have been discriminated against, they are all equally entitled to take legal action.

As I see it, this legislation would say that legally, a woman could still take legal action if they felt they were being discriminated against, but a man could not sue an potential employer for the same offense. Effectivey, men can be discriminated against but have no legal comeback.

Putting a positive spin on it, hopefully its one step towards going back to a society where no one is allowed to sue anyone else at all. :)

What a wonderful reply to a classic Michael post. Blair wanted women in his government, he got them, and she is typical of what you get when you tick the gender / colour / sexual preference boxes, rather than than the common sense, statesman and ability ones.

Isn't this just a perfect example of why women shouldn't be allowed to do important jobs though?

:innocent:

I'd say its human nature to be predjudiced and maintain status quo, so unpopular measures like this are necessary for a fairer society and to further distance us further from our neanderthal past.

Just for your info, the Neanderthals were a different species to Homo Sapiens, and either became extinct or 'blended' (bred) in with the stronger species IIRC. :)

Then again, society has progressed in leaps and bounds over the last 100 years, but maybe not always in the right direction ;)
