More Boost..

...and some advice needed.

I have a ‘95 J spec. The only mods I know about are a Blitz Access ECU (already fitted when I got it) and a HKS 3” front pipe / HKS Super Drager cat-back which TDI put on for me.

I’ve just fitted a boost gauge, in the clock position, and taken it for a run.

.8bar is the most I have seen. Sounds about right, I guess.

The question is; Should I fit a CW 1st cat replacement pipe without the restrictor.

I am assuming the Blitz ECU can up the fuelling to compensate for the higher boost.

Does this sound reasonable ?

Mike if you still have the front CAT in place then I would get this replaced with a CW pipe, you'll notice a big difference, the turbos will spool up a lot quicker and boost higher. I'm not sure what the Blitz ECU does that you have fitted but if you do not have a Fuel Cut Defencer then you will need to fit one (available from Pete Betts)

If you are still wanting more power after this then I would first fit a front mounted intercooler and/or water injection and then fit a boost controller. With the boost controller set up properly you will be able to increase the spool up speed of the turbos and maximise the boost to a safe limit (around 18psi.)

Mike, I have the HKS Priest system and HKS 3" second cat replacement pipe. I have a CW 1st cat replacement pipe but couldn't leave it on the car. I would boost up to 1.8bar or so with it fitted!

I also have the Blitz Access ECU, it does removes fuel cut. I would say that you probably can't fit the CW pipe without a restrictor.

Thanks guys,

Graham, that does seem to be pretty common result, although some people appear to get away with manageable boost. Does it vary from car to car or something?

From the Blitz site;

The boost pressure can only be raised a small amount before the limit starts to activate. To remove the boost limit, an upgraded ECU needs to be fitted (see Access computer upgrades). This will usually allow a 30-50% increase in boost pressure with corrected fuelling for the increased boost. Increasing the boost without increasing the fuelling will cause the engine to run lean, which can be fatal for the engine

The Boost limits are raised, the speed limits are removed, the rev-limiters are raised, the timing maps optimised, and the fuelling maps are adjusted to cope with higher boost

I guess my best bet is to give CW a call and see what he recons…

If the restrictor limits boost to say, 1.2bar I might as well just fit it. I doubt that I will ever want more than that anyway..

Cheers

i have just put an all in one decat pipe in and its boosting to 1.4bar its amazing the difference it makes but i know i need to sort it.going to get a restrictor adapter plate made off engineer at work.see if i can hold it at 1.2 bar i have an intercooler on way and have been told its safe at 1.3 if you have a big fmic.

if all that fails will try putting my silencer back in exhaust.or go get some cw pipes and get fueling sorted

have killed 2 porsches on way to and from blackpool :)

a new shape carrera 4 (dont know which one) and a old 911 with whale tail (best shape i like)

Well, had a chat with Chris…

…and ordered a 1st cat replacement pipe.

It seems it *might* be OK. It’s really a case of trying it. If there’s too much boost then he will supply a restrictor plate (calculated on the degree of overboost) to limit it.

He also suggested I might want to think about water injection to lower charge temps.

1.3 bar should be OK with water injection

Let you know how it goes :)
