The first thign you need to do is find out whether your current wheels will clear the larger uk calipers...........if they do its a pretty straight forward swap..........if not its still straight forward but potentially a very expensive one!

Thanks would it be easier to fit the UK shield?

Oh goodness yes, right mission to fit the UK shields.... Fitting the uk brakes is really as difficult as undoing the bolts to take the caliper off, undoing the brake line and doing the reverse with the UK caliper :)

Be aware that not all 18's clear the UK spec fronts...

What I recall about £600-700 for front calipers, £500ish for rears, £40-100 for pads depending on what you go for (Chris Wilson's being my preference..)

You have to remove old calipers, grind away the plate/guards and new calipers bolt straight on.

Looked for my old threads when i went through this..

http://www.internetwork.org.uk/brakes/brakes.htm

Nic is a good man to talk to, in my thread I started here he shows the clearance you'll require from hub to the wheel...

Hope this all helps. BTW brake upgrade on my old NA felt great :D

While, I will never say no to a UK brake upgrade as they are fanastic, before you start spending big pennies, what is the issue with the J-spec system? Are you finding you are at the limits of it? For a little less money you can improve the jspec system without changing it. Braided lines, set of CW pads and some good fluid. MOST people don't use the brakes to their limits, seriously..

Oh yeah John consider nice to haves if you're going UK route - 2 bottles of Motul 5.1 or better (1 for flush, 1 for change), some goodrich braided brake hoses.

Tho I agree with Gav, only look at it if you really feel you're reaching the limit of the j-specs. A set of nice new pads and the braided lines + fluid can make a reasonable difference (£60-70 for lines, £20 for the 5.1).

I've seen J-spec brakes on an auto-tt stop it in an incredibly short distance, and that was down to a good driver, I personally think the brakes MAY have had a bit more in it, but they stop like they are supposed to...Ask Class one..it was his car and he was driving..very impressive.

Thanks everyone great tips and advice :-)

Will consider all options.

I would still like to change the breaks though as i am intending moving up to volks gtc 19" and the small disks and old calipers look rubbish and don't give the tight responce I'm after....

Thanks all once again It's great to be part of this great club of like minded peeps :D

John this was my point..........i'd go as far to say 'most' 18's won't clear uk brakes.

As a very rough guide you'll need 25mm clearance from the outer most side of your current caliper to the inside edge of the spokes of your current wheels. There's an element of leeway here as the measurement i've taken is from my calipers (same as yours) to the stock 17's currently on the that obviously clear the UK calipers.

If you have say 15mm clearance then the UK's definitely won't fit, so i'd have a look at this before ordering bits :)

Fitment guide HERE courtesy of Heckler.

Pics HERE of the larger calipers.

Parts required for the conversion

Front Brakes

Pair of 4 pot front calipers

Pair of front discs (OEM Toyota or aftermarket)

Fitting kit (springs that hold the pads in place)

Shim kit (prevents pads squealing)

Set or pads (worth investing in a decent aftermarket set eg. Endless, TRD, etc.)

Rear Brakes

Pair of 2 pot rear calipers

Pair of rear discs

Fitting kit

Set or pads

*You don't need the rear shims you'll get no squealing and better brake feel without them.
