I always thought you could see a hernia (i.e. the muscle breached the skin).

No mate, it's usually where your intersines etc protrude through your muscles internally. If it broke through the skin it would be like Alien in the film.....:D

That's what you get for kicking around a pigs bladder. No good ever comes of it I tell thee!

Looks like I'm retired and fat at 33.......:( I'm off to the doctors today. I have private health cover so I'll see if I can get something done sharpish!!

I think you are probably overdoing it and stressing muscles in your back (lumbar region).

Where eaxactly is the pain, left hand side hip flexor/ groin area ?

Lack of excercise and strength has probably left you weak.

Try and build up strength in your core muscles, abs back and quads and groin muscles.

The pain is on my right hand side of my pelvis/groin area but not low enough to be a groin strain. During a game the pain builds up and the following day it's really bad and I get sudden pains when I lie on my back. I have let myself get really unfit through a mixture of bad habits and being unable to play footie after my nose op and then getting a really bad ligament tear in my ankle. I have only played about 6 games this year........:( I will be going back to the gym next month but I wonder if it is a hernia...!!

It just sounds an awful lot like an issue i sometimes have :)

Can you get the pain to reoccur if you press the area that becomes sore with a finger ?

No, at Le Mans we started kicking a ball about and the impact of kicking a ball brought the pain back. We only played for a couple of minutes. I am going to go for a jog later and try to find out exactly where the pain is. I have not played footie for a fortnight and at the moment I am pain free, I am aware that something isn't right though, if that makes sense....:)

Right, just booked into the quacks!!

I took my 5 year old to school just now and we had a kick about with a football for 5 minutes. The pain is back and it's now affecting me when I am walking. This has gone from being a small pain build during a match a few weeks ago to being a big problem. I haven't kicked a ball for a week but straight away it went again without using any power at all. Wierd.....:(

I've had 3 hernias, and had 2 of them fixed. Graham, I feel your pain. The op is not pleasant. Bl**dy weight training and martial arts!!

Dude, go see a doctor, but go to someone reputable. After I found the second hernia I went to the doctor and he told me it was a fat cyst... and I didn't even have any fat, plus I could push it back into my belly button, so I got a second opinion and it was in fact a hernia....

Been to see the doctor........

He is convinced that I have torn a ligament/tendon in my groin and I have not given it enough time to heal. I argued with him for a while but I amy get a second opinion.

His argument is that if there is no lump, there is no hernia. I am now on anti inflamatories for a week or two and he has told me to do some light exercise, swimming etc..!!

To say that I am not convinced is an understatement but he has proved me wrong before. I suppose that is why he's a doctor, although he can't feel the pain I am in...!!

Sports hernia's don't have a lump so I can see why you might not trust his judgement.

For myself I'm rather hoping that the torn ligament/tendon theory is correct because I can cope with that and manage the injury. There's always a lingering doubt though that it could be something more serious.

Have you got health insurance? You could always go private and get it checked out by specialists. No health insurance though and it'll cost you a fortune.

I have health insurance. I am not sure what to do now. I am 95% certain that rest is not going to fix this and I am going to be in the same boat a month down the line. The fact that it gives way if I do anything says to me that there is something out of place. Surely if it was tendons etc, there wouldn't have been this gradual build up of pain...??

If I were you, and if I had health insurance, I would get a second opinion and get a referal to these guys:

http://www.thegilmoregroinandherniaclinic.co.uk/

Gilmore's Groin was identified and first treated by the surgeon at this practice. I'm sure I read on their website what the costs of a consultation but I'm damned if I can find it now. It's not cheap though, but if your insurance can be talked into paying....

Assuming for a moment that you did have a sports hernia then these guys are well placed to find it.

Hello

I had a Hernia of the groin in the place you mention (about 2 inches to the left). There WAS a lump though and a sort of nagging pain. They sliced me open, tucked it back in, put a piece of guaze in there and 'stapled' me back together.

I was VERY black and blue everywhere, apparently they take your bits stretch them and sticky tape them down whilst doing the operation.

I was up and about in a day or two, fine in a week and could do sports in 6 weeks. I could do 'other' things after a few days if gentle :)

  • 4 weeks later...

Update!!

Went back to the docs today and saw a different doctor. He had a good grope and made me cough a lot and then said that I have an Inguinial Hernia or a Sports Hernia......:( Apparently this happens to a lot of professional footballers, so at least he thinks I am good at footie.....:D Apparently the hole is quite small but can be very painful which adds up really!

I decided to go back after trying to jog 150 yards on Monday night and failed...... It's becoming a bit of a problem now as I can feel it almost all the time.

I am now in a lot of pain after his rummaging but at least we are making progress. I will be contacting my health insurance people tomorrow. I bet they love me, 3 claims in two years....lol....:D

I had hernia and got it sorted last July, before it was done it looked like I had a massive bollock! Took me ages to get the BALLS to go to the doc to see what it was. Thought the lump might just disappear but instead it got huge. So when I did find out what it was it was a relief as I was worried I had cancer or something. Been a year now since I had op and everythings cool....:D
