Anyone had a hernia....??

As above. Started back playing football about 6 weeks ago and I seem to be in pain after I have been running. I thought it was a groin strain but I have had these before and the pain is sudden like a torn muscle. This pain gradually builds up and is more uncomfortable than anything, with the occasional sharp pain if you stretch.

The following day after a match I am in agony and if I sleep on my back I get sharp pains. If I don't excercise then it goes away after a couple of days........

Kicking a ball is also painful. I reckon it's a hernia but I am not sure. I thought about going to my GP but they are next to useless and would probalbly just tell me to rest or gove me anti-biotics as they do with practically everything I go to them with....FFS!! I also thought that hernia's were related to lifting more than anything?

Discuss......:)

Sounds like a hernia buddy. I think i ended up in a medical journal with mine as it was 4" above the belly button but i sure know what one feels like.

If you can't feel a thing when lying completely still yet as soon as you movie you get a sharp muscle pulling pain then its a hernia.

Do you have a lump where the pain is, where EXACTLY is the pain? if there is a lump, if you move your leg does the lump get bigger or smaller at all (handy being married to a nurse)

No lumps at all. It feels like a groin strain but it's too high up. It may be the weight of carrying this thing about........:eyebrows:

About about two inches to the left of "the last turkey in the shop"......!!:D

I always thought that it was your back with sciatica??

That's not normally associated directly with Hernia as such. The deff of Hernia is normally a pain directed at the abdominal area (abdominal hernias), the tummy area (diaphragmatic hernias), the pelvic area or pulpous of the internal vertebral discs.

There may be a chance that you have a slight case of the pelvic hernia due to pain location as the symptoms clear after you rest for a couple of days - meaning not so serious - a continuous pain is normally more substantial.

As per Bigcol comments, you can attempt to find some form of irregular shape under the surface of the skin. A Hernia comes in three parts you see. In basic terms, the first is the split of a cavity wall, the second is the bulbous sack petruding through the cavity and the third is the contents of the sack. The sheer nature of a petrusion of the sack through the cavity is how the pain is incurred and you should note that you can experience a small split in the majority of cavity walls without too much discomfort as long as the split is small and no sack is petruding.

Have a feel around following an excercise period and tell me what you think?

I would lie down and have a feel around the area that is causing you discomfort. Try not to use any muscles in the area and have a prod around. I found out i had mine while doing situps. Was really sore when doing them but when i lay flat i couldn't feel anything. I lay still and had a prod around and found a small lump. Gave it a push and.... arrghhhh.. thats the one lol

H, you should pop down to the medical bods IMO:) Don't forget that Hernia is not always that easy to identify as you can have something called intraparietal hernia which means that the buldge can not be identified through the skin as the sack does not penetrate the insultaed segemnt of the skin.

I would go down to the docs as you could have something as simple as cronic muscle strain - after all, you are a young lad;)

I've had great experiance with the dreaded hernia, a double and the damned thing popped again on one side, and had to be re-done , b***s like a frigging hippo mate, first time it was stitched , i couldn't stand for a week, they stitched it so tight in agony !! second time they stapled it , much better ! they also do keyhole surgery now or something like that.

cough and you feel a burning sensation in your groin it's a hernie mate ! :p

I had one, lower stomach... I thought it was something I was eating, for 3 months. Then had to have surgery. 45 minute op, lots of bruising and pain, BIG pain tablets, slept for 2 - 3 hours at a time. Moral of the story, GO TO THE F'ING DOCTOR!!!!

Was either martial arts or weight lifting, not sure...

I have exactly the same thing at the moment and I've been doing some research into the possible causes of the pain.

I also find that lying on my back the pain has been really bad and everything else you described sounds like exactly what I have. How does sneezing feel? For me, pretty painful.

It's not a normal hernia but it could be a sports hernia which still requires surgery to correct. I say could be because it's really not that common but the sport you injured yourself doing is the highest cause of it. I believe it's called Gilmore's Groin.

My injury came on during high mileage marathon training. It started off as a dull ache, then went into the painful stage that it sounds like you are at and now it's moved to a more general lower abdominal discomfort. It does feel like it's getting better though so at the moment I'm playing a waiting game, avoiding pain where possible and seeing what happens. I'm nursing it just like I've nursed other injuries before. I also don't have the option of taking weeks and weeks off as I'm building up the mileage for an ultramrathon in December. I'm going on the theory that not many runners get a sports hernia and it's most likely just a chronic sprain caused by high mileage training. It certainly does'nt affect my performance, I ran a race on Sunday and didn't feel a thing. Football though is a different thing though as it requires very different movements to running.

For the record though, I'm not anti seeing a GP or a specialist but I want to see whether it's improving or getting worse. Should it suddenly change I would cease running and get medical advice.
