cheekymonkey
Since Jap Show I am having a little trouble with my gearbox, nothing too major but I thought I'd try and find out about it before it gets worse. It's seems to be more difficult than normal to select 1st gear or reverse, but bringing the clutch back up and down again seems to sort it. For example if I'm approaching a roundabout in second, and need to slow to 1st gear I'll put the clutch in, try and select first but it won't go in. I then have to bring the clutch out in neutral and try again. What could be causing this? Sorry for my terrible explanations - still suffering from lack of sleep! Dave17
Clutch? My old mazda used to do that, needed new clutch. It was supposed to do that in reverse apparently though, so you couldn't put it in accidently
dibbleyuk
I was pretty sure you not ment to select down to first gear while moving.. but cant be sure i try not to as i fooked the gearbox on my swift gti when i passed my test by doing that and we also have a fiesta at work that has got a dodgy gearbox from the drivers doing that. cheekymonkey
Now I'm thinking about it, I'm pretty sure it's happening when I'm stationary, too. I noticed it this morning maneuvering into a parking space. I suppose the clutch *could* be on it's way out but it was only done in December
tooquicktostop
Did you run on the strip yesterday I can't remember !! Have you been practicing with the line lock you fitted, I think I remember you talking about launch practice for the pod, if the answer is yes then you could have a clutch problem as I do remember you having a stock clutch and it wont last long doing drag runs and burn outs, I doubt it is the box itself
cheekymonkey
Yes I've been practising burnouts and launches, and I ran 3 times on Saturday. Unfortunately my launches were atrocious - launch control didn't work for 2 of the runs, and one I just stuffed up. If my clutch is on the way out it might explain why the car was bogging down on launch! Yes it's a stock clutch. Will replace with something more suitable for drag and track! bignum
Sounds like clutch not releasing fully when you press the pedal, what clutch is it?
cheekymonkey
Sounds like clutch not releasing fully when you press the pedal, what clutch is it? It's a CW clutch which is a slightly modifed stock one. I did notice this morning that the clutch begins to bite really really low, with the pedal just off the floor. May be related... Chris Wilson
I did say it wasn't suitable for drag racing, sorry, but this sounds like it's been got too hot and the pressure plate is collapsing. If you drag race you have to treat clutches, like petrol, as a consumable. Some clutches are more suitable than others, for example a cerrametallic type is very UN suitable, a big hefty organic lined one is more suited, but to get the clamping pressure it'll probably give a much heavier pedal. If you like a light pedal but need a monster clutch you could put a servo on the clutch, i did this for Peter Stringfellow on an R5 Turbo 2, as he has a gammy leg. The stock Group A clutches were very heavy. With a sevo you could depress it with your fingers.
cheekymonkey
Chris, thanks for your comments, I did know that all bets were off when I started drag racing again How much would you charge to fit one of these RPS Street Max things if I were to source one? Check on the rps site as alot of the model dont reccomend drag use. I have a stage 2 paddle (6 puck) and even thats not for drag use. Also think about a heavy duty flywheel if your going to do drag runs. I use the rps cyn-r-g segmented thing but not sure if that drag rated but its desgned not to warp/buckle but be warned they make a terrible rattling noise when the box is warmed up. Im sure chris can reccomend something suitable for your needs though.

Chris Wilson
To be brutally honest, you drag racers need to decide whether to have a few clutches under the bed, or if you are totally serious, go for a specialised auto box set up. Short of a a big diameter none dual mass flywheel, and big organic plate (s), or the automatic and high stall speed torque converter options, anything else will be very sacrificial to the 1/4 mile. Drag racing kills transmissions, full stop.
cheekymonkey
I wouldn't say I'm "totally" serious, I just want to be able to enjoy a santa pod two or three times a year I think I may go down the RPS Street Max route, with money put aside for one "under the bed" as you say.
