Jaguar XJR 98-02 model vs Audi S8 98-02 model?

The late jags were supposed to be very good according to the surveys that they do but an 2002 car may be a little early.

Personally I wouldn't be concerned too much about reliability with either car if you buy one that's been looked after.

The V8 Jags can suffer from the widely known nikasil bore linining problems(some BMW's too  ), they can wear away excessively. It might be worth doing a little research. :)

Nikasil - Its a killer. Any V8 Jag engine from 96 to 98 had Nikasil liners and due to the high sulphur fuel that we got in the UK, it ate away slowly at the liners until one day the car would just not start. No reason at all. You could park it up the night before running fine and it would be dead the next day.

Get the cars chassis number and Jag dealers and specialists can check to see if it had nikasil. I had a early 1999 XKR and that had nikasil, engine was replaced with steel liners.

Jaguar V8 cars built with a Nikasil engine can be identified by the VIN number.

If the last six characters begin with an '8' the car was fitted with a Nikasil engine.

If the last six characters begin with an 'F' the car was fitted with a Steel lined engine.

Might not tell you if it's a replacement engine though. Jag replaced nikasil failures free on cars

Pistonheads has chat about Nikasil, which affects BMW v8s too incidentally

I'd take the XJR anyday, but it wouldn't be my head making the decision, it would be my heart, for me Audi = dull & non-descript, Jag = character & class.

My Jag XJ8 runs faultlessly & has done for the last 2 years. Parts aren't that bad if you go to places like EuroJag & my local Jag specialist isn't that expensive.

We dont see as much of the older XJ's anymore, BUT ide go with the Audi

XJ's can be reliable, but when they are not they're very very expensive to repair!!

XJ's very smooth to drive, i used to love cruizing in them, even the 3.2 V8 (the most reliable)

If you can push it, i'de go for the new shape XJ6 (X350), the 3.0 V6. Very nice motor, loads of room and very reliable!!! Don't know what they fetch, but these days i bet their cheap!!!

BUT saying all that about the Jag, Audi's aren't perfect, they can also be expensive to maintain. I'de drive both, then decide! You might get lucky with a nice XJ and you might get unlucky with an Audi
