Guest willismaximus
Hi Guys, hope someone can help, bought my car a few weeks back and noticed a bit of a difference in turning circle depending whether i turn left or right. I get about 1 full turn to the right and about three to the left.... [sAD][/sAD] Just put it into a local garage for them to have a quick look and they reckon it's had either the steering rack or column replaced at somepoint and when it's been done they haven't aligned it as they've put it back together. They claim that re-aligning the rack etc is going to cost £200.... i think this sounds a bit steep personally so does anyone else know anyone who could do this cheaper or is this a fair price. Also, does anyone know a trustworthy garage around the Dewsbury sort of area that can do the work for me? Thanks in advance
cheekymonkey
CW too far? He's already offered help! http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=152748
Chris Wilson
Any mechanic that actually understands how a rack and pinion works and how it needs equal arm lengths can do it. That should mean *ANY* mechanic can, but sadly the facts differ from the theory. I can do it, and I'm not that far away.
Guest willismaximus
I'm still trying to decide if CW's a bit too far away or not because i've only recently started a new job and i've already had to take some time off for other things etc so i don't really wanna take anymore off if i can help it might pm him to see how long the job would take etc so i can figure out the logistics of actually getting there having the job done and getting back in a day etc If i had more free-time available i wouldn't really be worried because given the choice i'd use someone like CW cos they'll definately know what they're doing when it comes to the Supe
merckx
They claim that re-aligning the rack etc is going to cost £200.... Extortionate!
Chris Wilson
Depends what's up with it. Just for adjustment, yes, sounds expensive, but if something's bent it could be mega cheap
Guest willismaximus
Well i get the impression the price quoted was for adjustment because i mentioned how much you had said you could do it for Chris and his face dropped, he looked like a kid who had just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar LOL Think he thought i'd just accept any price he quoted as being fair.... more fool him for making assumptions and trying to rip folk off
Guest willismaximus
Update - The Supra still isn't keen on turning right but at least i now may have a reason, took it to a garage last month who had a look at adjusting the suspension camber etc but couldn't get it anywhere near being aligned, they couldn't find anything to cause it other than a suspected bent front right Hub..... don't know for definate if this is the cause but i guess it's worth a try. I have to say though, if the hub is bent, should there not be some wierd vibrations or something when driving? cos at the minute there's not, in fact you wouldn't know there's anything wrong until you try and turn into a car parking space. Any idea's how much a new Hub will set me back anyone? Also, the front right shock is shot so a price for shocks would come in handy if anyone knows off the top of their head. SteveR
I'd be worried what might have caused that, sounds like it's had a fair whack.
AlanM
Were you driving for 6 months like that? If CW is close enough for me you are local ,,lol
Guest willismaximus
Yeah, the guy who was looking at it said the same, according to him, the upper suspension arm looks like it's non-standard so the wheels should be cambered in quite a bit (Presumably a previous owner had track based aspirations) but the right hand side one sit's completely straight and the mechanic couldn't see any damage anywhere so the only thing he can think of is the hub is bent.... Also there is a knocking from that corner on full lock which he thinks is the shock because he checked everything else and the usual suspects like the ball joint etc are fine....
