Scott
Just looking for some quick info. Can i just take the cam covers off and bolt them back on with little fuss? The reason i ask is the previous owner decided to have them painted with, what i assume, non VHT paint. The paint is chipping off so i want to get the covers off and give them a polish in work. Just don't want to take them off if i have to replace gaskets etc. Anything to look for when taking them off?
DamanC
Fairly easy mate. Swapped mine out a couple of weeks ago. Dont overtighten the bolts is the only tip i can recomend.
Scott
Thanks. I guess its common sense to put something over the cams while i have the covers off? A bit of cardboard or something do it? Will only have them off for a couple of days tops.
DamanC
Yeah, cover them up. I done it the easy way and just brought another set. Just a little something to make sure you dont over tighten the bolts: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=152238 I havent had any problems since despite them being over the desired torque. Ideally you should replace the washers for the nuts and all of the bolts. They are a little bit of rubber that obvoisly expands when they get hot and as a result exerts a little more force on keeping them on. Mine were fairly hard and brittle in some case's so needed to tighten them a little more. TLicence has a guide on here somewhere. I followed that, as a n00b to cam covers it took me around 3 hours in total with many a fag breaks Good luck
Scott
Ahhh thanks for that, i would have probably did them up too tight also. I just hope the previous owner hasn't had a go at them also lol. I'll probably just get a whole set of bolts & bits n bobs if i can. I'll have a look for part no's etc when i get home (online manuals) Edit: Cam cover bolts 90105-06166 12 off at £0.56 each Cam cover nut 90179-06288 4 off at £0.56 each Cam cover washer 90210-07001 16 off at £1.83 each Cam cover gasket (Inlet) 11213-46020 1 off at £7.53 each Cam cover gasket (Exhaust) 11214-46011 1 off at £7.53 each Thanks TLicense lol Edited June 18, 2008 by Scott (see edit history)
DamanC
There are part nos in TL licences thread. was about £2 per part iirc. 10 bolts and 4 washers IIRC. Do your gaskets too if they havent been done in a while. Also, order a coil pack connector or 2 just to be on the safe side. All part no's are in Tony's thread
kosmic
Easy enough job, only fiddly bit was the the little round washers which are threaded below the nuts on the end of the cam covers, a PITA to get off as mine were stuck solid. You may also need coil pack clips if yours havent been changed as mine broke off removing them, and also the 2 breather pipes between the cam covers go hard and brittle
mrdsukautos
also the hoses connecting cam cover have a tendency to be very brittle / hard and cracked for only a couple of pounds you can order new ones from Mr T
jackso11
Just to revive this thread.....what torque should the cam bolts be done up to? Going to have mine off at the weekend.
Scott
Just to revive this thread.....what torque should the cam bolts be done up to? Going to have mine off at the weekend. I think the proper engineering term is a wee nip It's very little IIRC, check out the toyota manuals. That will tell you what torque to set them to. I don't have a torque wrench so I just used my feel (ooeer)
Peter P
Did mine when I replaced them with the nice shiney ones rob mitchell did for me. There's also a grommet in the inlet cam cover side with an oil feed in that tends to go very brittle so I needed to replace mine, as it broke into bits when I tried getting it out to swap over! You might be ok though mate as your only taking them off to strip the rubbish paint as opposed to changing them for a different set. I got new cam cover gaskets for mine, but chances are I could have reused the old ones. For the sake of £15 odd I thought it was a good idea for peace of mind! The rear bolt and nut are the tricky ones from memory as I couldn't get on them without moving a few bits out the way first!!! Not a bad job though if you work methodically and take your time with it.
jackso11
Mine came off last year when Supraloopy did my stem seals, I changed all the seals, rubbers, gaskets, bolts, pipes etc then so they should be fine.
