Guest mattsupra
I don't understand the importance put on mobile phones. Maybe it comes from being of an age where I was used to people not being able to contact me every second of the day. In fact I LIKE not being able to be contacted wherever I am! It's like when it rings if you're driving. Fine...leave it to ring. There's nothing that can't wait 10 mins or so. and what if its an emergency? then what do you do ? bigcol
Would it not be easier just cancelling the call, carrying on with your original conversation then ringing whoever called and blagging them by saying you were driving etc but what would i know in with RedM on this, no one speaks to me either:(
Pete
and what if its an emergency? then what do you do ? How many "emergency" calls have you taken? I've not taken any in my life ever. This morning I was called whilst driving (I didn't answer) by a customer to tell me their website and email was down. It turned out the core router had hiccuped. Now from a business point of view you could say that was important - but there's naff all I could do about it on the road anyway. It wasn't exactly life and death. Were we all wiped out, with no ability to cope? Did did we sit for millenia thinking...If only someone could come up with a tiny hand held device/communicator thing. Until then- we won't know what to do in an emergency! ? if you're not sure what I'm on about Matt, give me a call on 0800 Numpty

I agree with this so much that my internal organs want to leap out, shouting " we agree!" I use my mobile maybe 3-4 times a year and seem to get by. I carry one in the car in case I get stuck and that's it. It really is a tyrannical instrument. When it gets to the state of affairs that soeone feels the need to break off a conversation with the person that is right in front of them in order to take a call, I think it's gone well beyond being just 'a useful tool'. tbourner
I have my mobile on me all the time, and I feel anxious if it's got no battery left! But I often get calls during the day when I'm at work talking to someone, and I ALWAYS mute the call and finish what I was doing. If I can close the conversation and pick up the call I do, if they've given up and hung up by then I usually see what the number was and decide if I'm going to phone them back or not. One thing that gets me though is answerphones, I have one at home to pick up messages from people/companies who I havent given my mobile number to, but I don't have one set up on my mobile and don't have my work voicemail set up either - and I actually get told off (in a nice way) for this!!! People seem annoyed that they couldn't leave me a message!!! The way I see it, if I'm not there to help, tough!
AndrewOW
and what if its an emergency? then what do you do ? I would hope they would've called the emergency services first. Then me. I do think people should be more gracious when receiving calls. I tend to either let it ring, or call them back when I'm free, unless it is an important call, then I will apologise to the person first and take the call. Its all about good manners really IMO. Charlotte
The one I object to is where you're in a shop or whatever and you're just about to be served or, even worse, are being served when the shop's phone rings and the assistant then ignores you and answers the phone! How rude is that! I've taken the trouble to go there and wait my turn but somebody else can just call them and get served before me because the ignorant shop assistant doesn't have the common manners to serve customers in the right order. Has the above ever happened you, Blackie? How would/did you feel about it? OMG this soooo winds me up! I was at a petrol station and the man behind the counter didn't even acknowledge I was there...inserted my card, putting in my pin, etc etc literally was on the phone the whole time. I felt like walking out without paying, just pain rude. I have my mobile phone on silent always. It tends to annoy people that are trying to get hold of me but I'd rather call them back than have it going off somewhere that I myself would find annoying. Edit: Now this absolutely infuriates me! There's this bloke at the local petrol station that’s always picking up his mobile when people are in the middle of paying, or even he just stands there carrying on with a conversation (in some Pakistani language) while people stand around waiting for him to finish... Ha ha I didn't read all the thread but clearly it's a petrol station thing!
outatime
A friend of mine was serving someone at a bar while on his mobile, the guy grabbed the phone and put it in a pint of beer I didn't have much sympathy, but the customer had to pay for the phone in the end.
