allawyg
Hi I need some advice about some parts for my 1993 supra I need to buy a crank pulley and tensionor and I need a timing belt and all the tensionors. what do you recommend me to buy and from where. Ive seen HKS cam pulleys these seem to be the best, are they easily fitted and do I need tensionors with this (im such a noooooooooooob) also with regards with crank pulley and tensionor ive seen hks set for £500 http://www.nengun.com/hks/crank-damper-pulley-kit and ive seen some for £50 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-SUPRA-JZA80-TURBO-LIGHT-WEIGHT-CRANK-PULLEY-X-3_W0QQitemZ350069331189QQihZ022QQcategoryZ72205QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting whats the difference, why so much difference in price. can someone help. I also need a timing belt cover, where can I get that
bolarbag
How old is your car? How many miles? If you are staying bpu, just get an oem crank pulley, their around 280quid from Paul Whiffin, I wouldnt bother with HKS Cam Gears, they are just for looks, there are no performance gains at bpu level, waste of money. All the tensioners - aka the timing belt tensioner you should be able to get from Mr T, your aux belt tensioner should be fine along with your dampener
allawyg
im running 500bhp its a 1993 jap spec single turbo conversion
bolarbag
If you are staying bpu, just get an oem crank pulley, their around 280quid from Paul Whiffin, OEM will still be fine, or Boost Logic or Titan e.t.c, that HKS looks very much like a Titan pulley, The Boost Logic and Titan Pulleys are dampened, so you wont go wrong with them, Again those cam gears will do nothing for ya until you install big cams, even then they are not needed, All the stock parts will be fine in terms of belts and tensioners What setup you running? allawyg
mate im such a noob I just got the car ill try explain what its got its running I think 750cc injectors its got a T88 turbo all the usual standard upgrades its got a hks fcon pro ecu ive been told its around 500bhp the crank pullies on the car and the tensionor have fallen apart, due to it being 500bhp ive been told. need also to change alternator and water pump the timing belt is comming apart so have to change that as well. u think stock will do it.. i drive pretty hard. I dont mind paying a lil extra to be on safe side
allawyg
also, is it normal for a crank pulley to cost around £500. its just a pulley am I missing something
bolarbag
The stock pulley is dampened, thats why its a little more expensive than a pulley:) There are no better designs than oem, your previous one probably failed as a result of mileage rather than your Hp There are plenty of folk who run oem crank pulleys on here with 650plus! If you have the extra to spare contact Joe at PHR or Dusty at MVP for the BL or the Titan one, its much a muchness, oem is better for its dampening abilities though, the BL has internal dampening as is the Titan, they are more hard wearing than oem over time(I'm talking 10years here!) So oem is more than up to scratch The cam gears are purely cosmetic the above traders will sort you out with these too, if you cannot wait there are plenty of uk traders that supply these parts too Whifbitz, Envy, e.t.c Why do you need a new water pump has the bearings worn or seized and why do you need a new alternator? allawyg
the car didnt come with an alternator, the brackets of the alternator on the block are damaged and need to be wealded, the mechanic told me today that the alternator connects to the waterpump and so I need a waterpump I think its broken off make any sense? lol So cam gears are purely cosmetic and a standard timing belt will do the job fine? is that right? if so ive just saved a whole heap of money I dont want spend stupidly just for looks, I just want quality products and if oem is fine then ill go for that. allawyg
cheers mate can cam gears be fitted on easily, how do they get adjusted?
bolarbag
Thats the thing they dont get adjusted, they get zero'd on install, you would be hard pushed to gain the 3-5hp that manufacturers claim
bolarbag
the mechanic told me today that the alternator connects to the waterpump and so I need a waterpump I think its broken off One of the brackets that holds the alternator goes through one of the cast holes on the water pump yes, you have to question why it came off on the first place:search: Oem parts can be had from virtually any trader from the ones I've stated, or the forum traders, if you need them quick and are prepared to pay a levy then call Steve Manley at Inchscape Toyota There is no need for an 'upgraded Timing belt', or cam gears, you wont see either if you have a stock valve cover anyway
tooquicktostop
Hi mate and welcome to the club, I have a few questions which may help you get the best out of the advice here Where did you buy the car from and do you have a full spec list, if so can you post it up with a pic of the engine bay The T88 is a very laggy turbo ( I had one on my R32 GTR) it produces a lot of power but at very high revs, it takes an age to spool, is your engine stock ? I take it you brought the car with the parts missing or broken already ??, or did this happen while driving Who is fixing the car now, do they know what they are doing with single Supras Edited June 17, 2008 by tooquicktostop (see edit history)

I am sure now we know which car it is you can get the full spec list, it has been in several magazines
bolarbag
Theres quite a bit of damage there on the tensioner, you will need a new one of those obviously, Have you dont a compression test on the car?
Chris Wilson
I would buy all stock Toyota parts for now, until you get it running, you *MAY* want to get adjustable aftermarket cam pulleys at a later date, if you decide to play with cam timing, or you need to skim the head or block. Chris Wilson
what will a compression test do? It is to test the compression in all the 6 cylinders to see if the thing's *uggered
