Swampy442
Mate of mine has a GTO, its been off the road for a while, it ate its clutch, and the transfer box, not cheap, also its hard to find a dealer who will touch it, let alone a specialist. Its all down to the transverse mounted V6 and 4wd. Theres not alot of room under those bonnets... RX7s are fine as long as theyre well maintained, Ive got a mate who has one with 70k on it and no rebuild (yet although it will need doing soon lol) Think the factory specify it must be pulled apart every 70k miles

Havard
I can repair the transfer box input shaft when they go, but at a price which will probably match or exceed the things value Setting fire to your wallet may be less psychologically damaging than actually owning one, IMO. Love that post!! I'd have one, but only as I can't find anything else to grow my plants in..... Horrible car!! H.
marcAB10
I reckon out of most of the jap performance coupes of that time (FTO,Supra,RX7 etc) the GTO looks a lot more dated, probably because the bodywork is a lot more fussy IMO.
Guest vr4much
I've owned 2 Gto's and have 1 coming in 2010, they are only unreliable if the previous owner did not maintain them., yes the 6 speed is better than 5 speed

Guest Hwoarang
You guys make me piss, i thought id browse your forums searching info you actually slag off the 3kgt when in fact its probably the fastest 0-60 with 4.8 + It is in FACT NOT a GTO, yes the same car bar alot of change, Bigger Turbos "13G" produce 320 (standard for the 3kgt on the market, at 9 psi and can easily run 17+ with supporting fuel mods) Bigger Brakes, Better gearbox, 6 speed getrag You lot are so biased towards them its unreal, No car magazine as reviewed a 3000gt properly, they av in fact reviewd the GTO and never the 3000gt, one magazine stated "its even got holes in the skirts to cool the tyres down" JESUS anyone can even look at the skirt, the black bits are just for show and no air can remotly pass through them. I like all jap performance cars, and everyone is going to have a opinion.but the GTO/3kgt styling is unique, no matter what anyone on here or any other site the gto/3kgt as MORE SPEC, FACT.! Electric suspension, Adjustable exhaust note, active aeros, AWS, electric seats with 4 way adjustable lumbar, Nice coloured display to change temperature, heated mirrors, even as lights on the doors when you open them, footwell lights, all of which a supra, skyline,rx7 as got. yes it does weight quite abit more, take off the AWS,Electric susp, aircon, electric seats few other little bits there you go, you have a MR 1500kg approx. The Supra as probably got the best engine out them all, Skyline as got the best engineering, 3kgt/gto as the looks (cant find a standard supra or skyline anywere, gto's dont need bodykits) For the money the 3kgt wins hands down, there half the price than supra/skyline This post will get flamed by you guys, but i will post a vid on here soon of my "13G powered" BPU 3000gt vs my mates BPU Supra TT and ill put this debate to rest. Welcome to the Supra forum Unsurprisingly, people on here prefer Supras, you know being a Supra forum. I believe our members are allowed to have opinions. If they find the 3000GT/GTOs to be a bit unreliable, it's not a bad thing it gets mentioned. Are you a disgruntled owner looking to move across to the Supra? Edit: You will also see that our members have a keen eye for some of the bad supras on that are on Sale from time to time. But I suspect you may not stick around long enough to read those opinions... Although if you were to ask which one is best, the 3000GT/GTO or Supra...well there's only one way to find out.

Chris Wilson
He's American I assume, spelling is rarely their forte, in my experience and very protective of this car's reputation. It has a certain uniqueness, from what I have just read though. A fabulous technological icon that's yours for the price of a decent meal. What has the buying public missed here? What has the motor trade missed by valuing them similarly to a packet of detergent? How can someone get so defensive over something like an old car? Oh, right, yes, I'd forgotten, he's apparently American.....And what market was this overweight, over adorned, over gadgetted but under developed piece of flash for little cash aimed at? Actually, joking apart, I think they look quite nice in a vulgar sort of way. But in all seriousness they have never proven to be either reliable, durable or a sound buy either new or very second hand.
suprafan72
I owned one for a while and you need a permanent cash dispenser to own one.. I tryed to go down the tuning market with it.. I started to upgrade turbos..fuel system etc, they are prone to have heavy knock counts on anything above 10psi... even up to 20 counts and then it pulls back serious timing... which makes it very slow.... You cant really drive them fast as the Head gasket blows so easy and it pops pistons like tommorow.. Never again!!!!!

Maybe it will get flamed, but if you read at the top of your browser this is a supra forum and as your first post your going to get ever so chargrilled. Plus this thread has been going a while, I doubt you will be the one to put it to rest. Your best course of action for your second post, is to introduce yourself rather than come in all guns blazing, you will get shot down big style. RobSheffield
Personally i like the look of them, just wish they didn't have chocolate transfer boxes and a heat compromised engine layout.
SteveC
I briefly considered a GTO back in 2001 just before I bought the Supra. The mechanic at the local Mitsubishi dealer said he would not have a GTO given to him for free. He went on to say they're not great to drive, incredibly unreliable and cost a small fortune to constantly repair. He couldn't understand why anybody would want one and he sounded like he actually hated the things. Needless to say, that was the end of my interest in a GTO. ...they do look ok though - in a 'brash' sort of way.
