Elliot
A quick 'geeky' (but important) spelling / grammar question really! When referring to stadiums/stadia in the plural, is it a) stadiums or b) stadia I'm supposed to be doing a dissertation on Portsmouth & Southampton and their respective 'grounds' but still haven't got a definitive answer on this! Any stadium / stadia or spelling gurus out there?! Any explanation would be appreciated - and no laughing at my lack of knowledge of the English language! Class One
Stadia for plural, stadium for singular.
Holly
Google Search: The plural of the Latin word "stadium" is "stadia". In Latin dictionaries, it's the convention to show not the plural of a noun, but the genitive singular, so that you can tell which noun declension applies to the word you've looked up. Once you know the declension, the plural is known, because all the nouns of that declension have the same plural endings. So in the case of "stadium", the genitive singular is "stadii" and the plural is "stadia". ... and ... just to confuse you although I'd stick to stadia ... stadium noun {C} plural stadiums or stadia a large enclosed area of land with rows of seats around the sides and often with no roof which is used for sports events and musical performances: - Thousands of football fans packed into the stadium to watch the match. Jake
Does our ground even qualify as a stadium? It must be the crappiest ground they've ever had in the Premiership. The visiting team's fans don't even get a roof over them! St Mary's is lovely though. It must be one of the nicest grounds in the country.

Elliot
Excellent - Thanks folks, especially Holly! So 'stadiums' isn't a valid word then? What an exciting Friday night for me, doing my dissertation Does our ground even qualify as a stadium? It must be the crappiest ground they've ever had in the Premiership. The visiting team's fans don't even get a roof over them! St Mary's is lovely though. It must be one of the nicest grounds in the country. You're right there, with any luck it will be revamped this century! There's supposed to be an anouncement soon though. I have a terrible feeling they're going to delay it until the end of next season. That, or build the quickest stadium ever! Oh well, doubt I'll be renewing my season ticket anyway with all the money I've spent on the car in the last few months. As for the away fans, I do feel sorry for them. (Except when it rains, or they need the toilet, or even something to eat!)
