Advice on doing up Supra

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have brought a new supra and I need advice because im a bit of a newb.

the car has all the basic mods, induction kit, single turbo and wastegate, manifold down pipe, intercooler, 500cc injectors, uprated fuel pump, the car is said to be running around 500-550 bhp

I wanna do some upgrades and get the engine tip top.

what advice can you guys give me.

I was thinking of doing the following tell me if im missing anything or that maybe theres no need for it.

1-hks belts and pullies (adjustable cams)

2- hks camshaft (theres different types, what do u guys reccomend and is theres only one, cos i keep seeing places sell 2)

3- hks forged pistons (do i need these)

4- hks head gasget

5- hls crankshaft ( do i really need this)

is hks the best make to go for. its pretty expensive, Also is there any other mods im missing, I want the car to run 600bhp perfectly with no problems, the car suspension n brakes are uprated already.

cheers guys

Welcome to the club

Do you have any more details of the modifications? eg. turbo size, kit fitted, injector sizes, ECU being used, intercooler type, etc. As much detail as possible with photos would be helpful, that way we can advise better. Click my garage here to see the type of detail I mean.

Yes HKS is one of the premium Japanese brands, we need more detail though before we can give you proper advice really.

Firstly, what is the car going to be used for?

Secondly, what sort of budget do you have

Thirdly, most of what you put isnt 'needed'

Fourthly, find a place that knows these cars inside out, maybe AFR, because not being sure if you need one or two cams is worrying if you are speccing things up!

Ahh so you bought the Candy red one that was on ebay i recognise the engine bay

Well I can tell you the engine is completely standard as the built engine (i.e golden paperweight to everyone else) was removed.

You will at least need to upgrade the injectors to 800cc probably, Cams would be a must in my opnion to get more from the turbo.

However as the car has a wide kit and no RLTC was mention when a friend made enquires about it. I would be getting RLTC and keeping the power to below 600BHP if you want to use it. :)

Someone more technical will be along to help out telling you more detailed of what you will need, but you will definetly require a remap at some point if you are going to change things. Does it have an Air - fuel Ratio meter in the dash at all?

HI guys, thanks for all the replies

emm the guy said its not 550 injectors. its 750 with uprated fuel lining,

I dunno what my budget is. Im looking to find out what I should do to it then set a budget and start saving up.

the car is going to be used for road use only and driving hard on road.

I wanna get the car to run 600bhp reliably. the car does have an aftermarket traction control.

I wanna know what I need to do, If I need cams then which cams, the hks cams got all these angle differences and I dunno much about it

What does that mean. im confused.

There was a car known as the golden paperweight...why... because it had a highly tuned engine and appeared to be never run :D

The guy said this engine was removed and a doner engine was added to run the single turbo.

You've got the makings of a good supra there, but you need to get the engine looked at and the car checked its running ok.

Im surprised he didnt change the Ad to say 750CC as that makes alot of difference to someone who is buying a car. You may want the injectors flow tested to be sure what they are.

Do you know what boost its running at the mo? Make sure its 1.2 to be on safe side for now. I heard it was running 1.6bar when the crank pulley went.

Not shooting down the car its lovely. I just dont want you having to buy a new engine when running a bit conservative for a while may mean you just need to buy a few bits :)

My suggestion is to PM traders off here, who will take the car in for you and do some checks and a rolling road. AFR Tuning, Chris wilson (not sure where your based.)

Thanks mate,

yea I definately need to get it checked out

Im based in West London. If you can recommend me someone good that would be great.

normally what would you need to do to the engine to get it up to 600bhp reliably. thats sort of what I want to find out. I mean you know what the car seems to have, what from the top of ur head would u think id need to do extra taking in mind i drive quite hard on the road.

cheers mate, appreciate all your advice

I mean obviously replace the crank pullies and maybe get the altenator refurbished.

can you recommend me what ones to get. ive seen a HKS Crank Damper Pulley Kit for £550. http://www.nengun.com/hks/crank-damper-pulley-kit.

what you think, i mean I know thats the bare minimum I need to do to get the car running. I think boost is set down to 1.2 yea.

I wanna do up everything I need to do then go get it remapped. is that the right way to go about it?

The main problem is that you don't really know the current spec of the car, you need to find this out before deciding where you go from there.

First thing I suggest is to get the car to a reputable Supra specialist and get it thoroughly looked over so you know what is what.

After you have done that then we can give you some advice, at the moment everything is really too vague.
