Tricky-Ricky
Going to start a new thread related to my smoking issues, to explore other possibilities, and as an attempt to stop me going slowly insane:blink: I am starting to doubt my own ability's now:( brief history of the problem, after a spirited run about four weeks ago, my car started to smoke, but not until hot, it would do it on idle and also puffed a bit on closed throttle, but not on boost, i suspected the turbo seals on my hybrids, but before i riped them out, i run compression check, all OK and also a leak-down test, again all seemed OK. So out came the twins and sure enough no 1 had oil in the intake side and sowed signs of burning it in the exhaust side, the same was true of the 2 and turbo on the exhaust side, so i contacted the company that built them and the where sent back for a rebuild, they seemed to except responsibility after i sent pics, (also posted on here) Edit, got an email from the turbo company saying that they had now examined my hybrids and found everything within tolerances:blink: not sure i believe that as the pics spoke for themselves! however they say there going to rebuild them and send them back Anyway in the meantime i bought a second hand single kit that supposedly had only 500 miles on it, so i finished the install and what happens, smoke again:( now is it just bad luck/coincidence? or is there something i am missing? Slightly different scenario but similar, as mentioned in my "|Single Issues & Smoke thread) Now what it doesn't do is smoke from cold start up as most VSS do, smoke all the time like a bad ring would do, so what i want is lots of answers from people who have had smoke problems and what caused it, as this whole thing is driving me as mad as a bag of frogs:blink: Edited June 12, 2008 by Tricky-Ricky (see edit history)
JustGav
Worn bearing letting the oil through to the exhaust?
gaz1
mmmm i cannot help with that one, but i think my run of bad luck has now moved to you, really feel for you mate, i hope its something simple
bignum
My thinking is, as the oil heats up it looses viscosity so seeps past seals, i had a leak on my return which only happened when hot.

supra matt
What oil are you running Mate dose sound like turbo seals to me if it only dose it once hot ,
merckx
but not until hot, it would do it on idle and also puffed a bit on closed throttle, but not on boost Sounds like my van turbo, excessive wear. Isn't the reason that you don't think it smokes on boost only because you cannot see the smoke when travelling at speed?
Tricky-Ricky
Sounds like my van turbo, excessive wear. Isn't the reason that you don't think it smokes on boost only because you cannot see the smoke when travelling at speed? I'm using Shell semi synth 10W40, yes i guess it could be smoking on boost i guess, but surly it would also show up on medium throttle at lower speed, say going uphill, the turbo would be spinning pretty fast just not really making boost, but it doesn't, but as soon as i lift off and use engine braking it will usually smoke
Tricky-Ricky
Question, has anyone who has suffered valve stem seal wear, had it first show up on a hot engine, ie smoke on closed throttle? can anyone who has had to replace a piston ring due to breakage, outline the first signs? Tricky-Ricky
Update, and I'm writing this with fingers crossed and stroking my lucky rabbits foot;) after cleaning everything up, did find that the drain could have been leaking at the turbo gasket, but not certain as the was oil from the feed as well, bolted it all back together with locktite, and i also put an extra coupling into the oil feed, although its pretty much the same size as the elbow, it may act as an extra restrictor, i then took it out for a few short runs and, NO SMOKE! at least none that i could see, not breathing a sigh of relief yet, I'll try it over the weekend. So I'm wondering if its possible for the oil that was hanging around the bottom of the turbo drain area to be pulled through to the exhaust housing when the coming off the throttle, sounds plausible to me, hope I'm not clutching at straws;)
Tricky-Ricky
I took the Supra out again today, and after a short trip around town, i headed out into the country, and going down a long steep hill just outside town a did notice some smoke in my rear camera although difficult to tell, but it looked like it in the mirror, and that was on closed throttle. Anyway i continued and could not see any more smoke strange! i then proceeded to test the spool up and boost, and saw no more smoke for the rest of the journey:) 30 odd mls, anyone got an explanation? Tricky-Ricky
I hope! but i can't get my head around why it should just smoke the once.
