Angel eyes - job done

Finally got around to refurbish my j-specs, give them a "facelift style" treatment and installed angel eyes. I took some pictures along the way if you fancy having a go. There's recently been some interest about them on here, it was well worth doing! Took the whole weekend mind, but pretty happy with the results.

I bought the angel eyes kit from http://www.angeleyesweb.co.uk/ (thanks konio-nt). The correct sizes to order are:

Fog light: 2x 55mm inside diameter, 71mm as outside diameter, closed ring, bare bulbs with wires and casing

For dipped beam: 2x White colour angeleyes, 85mm inside diameter, 95mm as outside diameter, closed ring, bare bulbs with wires and casing

Inverters: 2x angeleyes lcd inverter type 200025 12v to connect with ccfl ring of diam of less than 131mm rings Angel eyes bare bulbs

The kit arrived next day, this is how it looks like:

Then the difficult job started, taking apart the headlights.

I unscrewed everything that could be unscrewed from the back, removed the metalic clips then popped them in the oven at 70C for 10 minutes. Took them out and tried to separate them a bit, then back in the oven for another 10 minutes at the same temperature. Repeated a few times and finally they came apart.

After, I masked the rings and used 600 grit, 800 grit, 1000 grit and 1500 grit sand paper to remove the chrome paint from the inside casings. When everything was smooth I primed them with grey plastic primer:

And 18 hours later I sprayed a few light coats of VHT black paint:

When they dried up, I drilled three holes for the angel eyes' cables to pass through:

Then, time to tackle the nicotine yellow plastic lenses...

I used 1000 grit, 1200 grit and 1500 grit wet sand paper on the outside only. They clouded out pretty bad but with constant buffing with Meguiar's Plastix and ScratchX they smoothed out really well. I buffed the inside too with the same products.

I finally assembled everything back together, popped them back in the oven at 70C and used roof & gutter black silicone sealant in the edges.

These are the products I used:

Damn you Multics!

A sterling job I must say... I'm getting itchy in the wallet.

I know you said it took you the whole weekend, but how many hours approx? I guess 20 minutes in the oven for the lens removal, and the sandpapering fun. Could it be done in a single day and ready in the evening if you started first thing?
