Custom made SMIC a bad thing?

I’m currently debating on whether to get a new smic made up exactly the same as a oem one or just buy a considerably more expensive Greddy unit for piece of mind, I’ve herd stories of poor eBay smic messing up the boost but would a made up intercooler made to the exact dimensions of a oem one make any difference?

What do you use the car for?

 

I ask as if its a just a daily then yeah stick with the sidemount, either oem or cw smic, the greddy ones are good too

 

If its a weekend/track toy then I'd be looking at either a fmic or a vmount fmic,

 

How much can you get the custom IC made for, if its in the region of 500quid I know I'd rather go with a proven product, but if your looking to save your cash and it is a lot cheaper depending on the smic your buying the difference will be minimal as long as there is no leaks e.t.c

Over the past few years, some people on here have gone through the serious development stuff it takes to design an SMIC that rivals the stock one. MiamiGT had some made up in the US - one of which I decided to try. They do work really well, but it goes to show that they had much more to do than copy the fitment bits.

 

Our resident supra jedi Chris Wilson developed his own uprated SMIC, which many have had the benefit of fitting.

 

If time is on your side, I would consider getting a new OEM one from Nic - who is also able to source the Greddy model.

 

So I'd say it's CW's SMIC as a first choice (if he has any), or Nic for OEM as a close second. But, having said that, you might stumble upon something really good from eBay - but my thoughts are still firmly rooted in 'you get what you pay for'.

I suspect that to get a custom made one to be better than the stock OEM one you'd be spending about the same as if you just bought the Greddy unit anyway. I may be wrong though, how much can you get the Greddy one for?

The Greddy SMIC is the price it is because it uses very good quality cores (the same core design used in the Greddy 3 and 4 Row FMIC's which are £1000+). If you wanted to get a one off custom made SMIC to the same spec as the Greddy, then it would cost you a lot more.

 

Yes you''ll be able to get a SMIC made cheaper if you used a cheaper less efficient core (like the old Miami GT ones), but it would not be up to the spec of the GReddy SMIC or probably even the stock OEM SMIC.

 

The OEM SMIC uses a very good quality core, if you don't want to stretch to the price of the Greddy SMIC, I would go for a cheaper brand new OEM SMIC.

Iirc does it not also support small singles? So the Greddy smic will not limit you to just stock/BPU levels like a custom made one may do. I believe Wez is running a single on a CW smic.

 

As said on MSN Pete and also said already on this thread, you get what you pay for. ;)

Yes the GReddy SMIC should be great with a smallish T61-T67 single as Wez has proved. The big advantage of the GReddy SMIC is that it is properly ducted the same as the stock SMIC, so I dare say is a lot more efficient than most cheap FMIC with no ducting.

 

Agree, with IC's you get what you pay for, they all may 'look' the same, but there is a big difference between a properly designed IC and some cheap bling you get on ebay for the price of a packet of crisps.

RadTec (UK Based) also make SMIC for the Supra for around £450, though it is an 'uprated' version (the core is 165mm deep drawn tube with louvered fin) and slightly deeper than stock so could have clearance issues with the drivers side inner wheel arch liner that sits at the back of the SMIC.

 

I havent seen the Supra specific one, a couple on here run them, however i have seen other RadTec stuff on race cars and its high quality stuff.
