differential and gearbox problems are common on supras?

Just talked to a guy about that 100.000miles supra i'm planning to buy and he warned me that probably the differential and the manual transmission can be in their last days of life.

He told me that he had to replace his differential with only 50.000 miles.

Is that truth?

I have always been told that supras were overengineered and they had a strong differential and transmissions. (not like the mitsu 3000gt VR4)

What do you guys say about it?

What's the common failures on the supras?

Thanks.

That said I drove around with a gearbox (auto) half full of oil for about three months. Put some oil in it when I found out and ran perfectly for the last 10 months.

It's always down to the question of how well things have been looked after (including the use of the right oils as Alex mentioned).

The gearbox and diff on my car are toast.

After 4000 miles of ownership decided to service it, the diff oil was like treacle with added gear shavings and there was virtually no oil in the box (less than 200ml!). Its a credit to the gerbox that it can last this long but I now have to double de-clutch to get 1st and 2nd when its cold!

Leason learn - get the car fully serviced as soon as you buy it!

They are very tough, if serviced regularly and with the right lubricants they will go for a long time. A UK MKIV is going stong at 300,000+ miles with only brakes and a few pumps changed.

Only use what toyota recomends for each lubricant and you but remember it is you who will picks up the repair bill when things go wrong.

As said above the main problems with boxes and diffs have been caused by the use of non approve lubricants.
