Chris Wilson
Is the below any use for the technical FAQ section, I wrote it for A.N Other forum just now? Thanks, use as you see fit with accredition to me please. ta Pillow ball (spherical bearing top mounts) serve no other purpose on the MKIV Supra than to reduce some compliance in the damper mounting, meaning a small vertical movement of the road wheel is more faithfully transmitted into the damper unit itself as one end of the damper is no longer compliantly rubber mounted. A pillow ball mount offers NO suspension geometry adjustment at either front or back of a MKIV as the damper angle is totally independent of camber or castor, it NOT being a McPherson strut type suspension. Be aware pillow balls from Japan usually come with *rap bearings in them that soon develop play and then they knock like hell. Most can have just the bearing itself replaced by a quality bearing like an NMB race type, but at a price. Race quality PTFE / kevlar lined stainless spherical bearings are eye wateringly expensive... But they will last for years and not knock! My personal opinion is that most MKIV's will not benefit from pillow ball mounts, and your money could be much better spent elsewhere. Thorin
You’ll have a lightweight stripped out racing wallet, apart from that Chris didn’t really mention any – Ian C PMSL

terawua
well.... no point in having Tein Flex on my wish list then.....*thinks about downgrading to Tein Super Street but really wants a CW kit*

Guest Terry S
mmm, what about the steering repsonse/feed back Chris.
TLicense
Terry, As Chris rightly points out (and indeed pointed out to me a few weeks back, which made me look into it) as we're not running McPherson struts the top mount only really locates the damper in the vertical position. So making the top mount stiffer for, shall we say radial movement doesn't make any odd as the OEM top mount hasn't got any loading in that direction anyway. Well that's the way I've understood it.... Guest Terry S
mmm again, there is definitely a far superior feel through the steering. I find the car far more "alive" in a good sense, and this in turn bring more confidence. You really should make the effort to try it Tony. TRD3000GT
well.... no point in having Tein Flex on my wish list then.....*thinks about downgrading to Tein Super Street but really wants a CW kit* The tein flex kit does not have an adjustable pillow ball mount. Chris Wilson
What i was trying to convey was the use of an *ADJUSTABLE* pillow ball top mount was useless, as there is nothing to be altered, geo wise, from altering the angle of the damper. It's not like a strut type suspension where strut angle alters camber and castor angle. For sure, the damper may feel more responsive from a solid top mount, whether the NVH and potetial wear of the top mount joints make it worthwhile only you can decide. The dampers still has a big squidgy rubber bush at the bottom end when you have gone to solid top mounts....

Guest Terry S
OK agreed, just wanted to clarify, as IMHO they can be a great Mod, and your original post could be construed that they are pretty worthless. Also remember the uprated bushes are readily available now too.
terawua
Oh.... I was looking on the http://www.tein.com website, and it says there that it does come with pillow ball mounts. Oh well, guess its a case of just asking...
terawua
This is off the Tein website... "The rubber bush is replaced with a pillow ball which eliminates the load input compliance, reduces the change of alignment to improve the grip of the tire. *NMB's (The world's top spherical bearing manufacture) pillow ball is used." so does this change matters? Guest Terry S
People also need to understand that there is a compliance issue with Pillowballs. There is loss or ride quality which is a side effect of more feed back. Our JIC's really arent too bad, but Some Supras I have tried that have Pillowballs were plain awful for a road car.
