ben_stevo
I have a 1994 NA supra and I want to decat it, on my old car (Glanza) I just took the cat off and gutted it (smashed all the internals out) and it worked excellent and didnt cost me a penny! Can you do this with the Supra and will it still pass an mot? If so which cat should I gut as I believe there is 2? Thanks
miko_supra
It's VERY tough material to "smash" it would probably take you a whole weekend
carl0s
Do the first cat (most restrictive) and it should pass with just the second in place. That's the case with a TT anyway I think.
TurboBrett
just received my second decat, and i am considering doing this to the first ill let you know how it goes when i get the car back from the bodyshop;)
Dazzi
I did my 1st cat like this. Took a total of 20 hours to gut the 1st cat. 2nd cat I chucked loads of nitro methane in an set it a light. This stuff burns hot and melted most of it but i think the casing is donald ducked now
ben_stevo
It took about 2 mins at the most with my old Glanza, hacked at it with a hammer and chisel, How comes it takes so long on the supra? Does it make the car any louder as at the minute mines way too quiet for my liking. Think im going to have a go at it tomorrow, how hard is it to remove the 1st cat? ben_stevo
And ive just had a look at the exhaust from under the bonnet and I cant figure out which part is the 1st cat?
Dazzi
1st cat is the part where it goes from 2 pipes to 1 pipe from the head. It takes long to gut because the metal is so far down you can't get pliers in too well. It does increase the noise a little.
ben_stevo
metal? when I did my old cat is was made from a white material which smashed into small pieces. So lets start again! How do you gut the Supra cat! lol
miko_supra
Seriously. Take the cat out and have a look at the material in it. When you hit it with a chisel or what ever it will lightly dent it i would imagine... and then you will give up
Dazzi
Yea, metal like a honey cone. I used a hammer and chisel to start with and hammered most of it out with a long screw driver. I then used long pliers to grabs the bits out. Its not an easy job with the na 1st cat.
ben_stevo
So is it worth it then? and how does the cat come off? Im just been lazy and asking because I cant be arsed to go outside and have a look myself!
Dazzi
Personally, I would buy a decat pipe. I would not do this again Comes off with a 12mm spanner IIRC
ben_stevo
Theres got to be an easy way to remove the internals! Im going to have a crack at it tomorrow, Il let you know how I get on. Thanks for the help guys!
mikeyb10supra
this is a ridiculous method im sorry, just buy a decat pipe, why risk all that debris flying about inside and potentially red hot metal hitting car bumpers behind you as they fly out or blocking up your 2nd cat, causing a massive blockage and melting things, there cheap enough to buy now and keep the cat for your MOT

ADL Mark
Also, the cat material is very very poisonous, do NOT breath it in! Best way if you insist on gutting it, soak it in oil first to stop dust and fragments flying in the air and getting breathed in. Also be careful what you do with the remains as it could be very harmful to animals, wildlife etc. if left around. Much better to just buy a decat pipe as they're really not expensive! miko_supra
If this is for an n/a then you're wasting your time any way. All your going to gain is droning. BUT...I know someone who will be soon selling a n/a stainless manifold soon, which replaces the 1st cat.
