Remapped BMW 535D Vs BPU Supra or Aristo

Hi guys,

I drive a tweaked e46 BMW 330D was my daily car as well as the mk2 Aristo I have. The car is around 300bhp with just over 400ft/lb torque and it has been 100% reliable so far.

I have been looking at the BMW 335d, but I don't like the shape of the new 3 series and the coupe which is very nice is just too expensive. So I have been thinking about the 535D which has the same Twin Turbo engine as the 335d but because its been out a few years longer then the 335d is alot cheaper to buy.

The 535d remapped would be around 340bhp with 520++ft/lb torque!

I know a BPU Aristo would be around the 400bhp mark (not sure on torque)

I was thinking that if a BMW 535D performed as well or better then a BPU Aristo or Supra then it doesn't make sense to keep both!

Has anyone done any comparisons between a Supra and BPU performance wise? I know they are completely different cars and I am not sure about the interior in the BMW 5 series nor am I sure that I actually like the look of it :D but the performance would win me over.

A friend of mine drove one a few months back and raved as his "blew the doors off a Audi RS4" which I find doubtful but you never know!

Thanks,

Anees

I've got a DMS remapped 535d - 344bhp and 560lb/ft - It's laugh out loud quick. I mean seriously.

I've out dragged the 5ltr V8 M5 up the A1, been neck a neck with an RS4 up the M58 and lost out to the V10 M5 from 80-140 leptons by about 2 car lengths.

I use it every day for work. Takes about 85 quid to fill at the current prices (120.9/ltr) and returns around 34.8mpg, equating to 550 miles to a tank.

IMO, there's no better commuter car out there for the money. I'll be changing soon, either for a 635d or another 535d.

With the price of Diesel being more than V power now I know what i'd be getting shot of.

I know what you mean! I really love my 330D but today I filled up and it was

130.9p/litre!!!!

The fuel economy is superb however and on a run I can get 50mpg+ and around 33 - 35mpg around town with a bit of motorway. With the cost of diesel at the moment that fuel economy advantage might not last.

Thanks :)

My mate that drove the 535D that had the do with the RS4 also had the same DMS remap. I feel gutted that I never got to drive the thing! :( He still can not stop raving about it, says it is hands down quicker then any other car has has driven (mostly evos, scoobies and skylines).

The thing that would put me off the 535D is the lack of a manual option, but I would have to drive it really to see what I think. Even in the Aristo I am not a fan of the autobox so I wouldn't want two auto cars.

The thing I love about modern performance diesels is that its like having your cake and eating it.

How do you find the car round the corners? Does it feel nose heavy?

I'd agree with your friend - save for 911 Turbo's and the like, it's probably one of the best point-to-point cars out there for the money.

The automatic box is a 6 speed with manual shift option, which I tend to use when going through the lanes, nice tap up or down. The gears are so well suited to the car though that it's really hard to fault, it's a constant wave of torque.

As for the handling, that's interesting - the outright grip is great. You can put it into long sharpish bends and it has no right to come out the other side, but quick direction changes to hurt it a bit. Will easily keep up with hot hatches though.

The stock TC is a bit invasive, the brakes are great and the power is very linear. It's a car that's very easy to drive quick but a bit harder to drive fast.

When you choose to "go", though. Not a lot will stay with you.

Interesting.......

Can you do more mods to make the car quicker or would 350bhp is about the safe limit?

On my 330D I have uprated airfilter, catback exhaust, Allard intercooler and a few other bits and it has been rock solid since day one. It would be interesting to see how far the 535d could go?

When I got the 330D remapped, the place I went to said that the engine could easily produce more power still well inside tolerences but the gearbox and drivetrain wouldn't handle it!

The engine is easily capable of taking more power, in fact, DMS had theirs running over 400bhp and over 700lb/ft, but it was taking it's toll on the autobox/transmission setup. That's rated to a safe 670lb/ft IIRC - so they run it was 560 to aid in the longevity.

The only issue I've had with mine is a split hose from the turbo. £15 repair, DIY.

Im starting to wonder how i kept up with one in my N/A. Maybe he wasnt trying ?

By chance i saw a 335D next to me at the lights the other day. I was turning left so couldnt have go, but he set off at a serious pace. Doubt i could of kept up with it. Even weirder bit about it was that it was almost silent. If i floor my car off the lights everyone knows about it as it makes an almighty row, but the 335D was quiet as a mouse.

I would have torched my M5 if a diesel out dragged me...but that torque does look awesome. I never had a diesel test me tho! Guess i was fortunate!!! lol

Well, I'll be taking two prominent members of the forum out in it on Monday - I'll let them do the reporting for me :)

I've got a stock (at the moment) TT6 VVTi, and the BMW smokes it from rolling starts.

for a comparsion...(im gonna get shot with this controversie :( )...

a starlet gt, is able to creep up on a 330D even up to decent speeds, and ive been told that a GT will also pull from a supe n/a low down, so i doubt you could get near a 335D unfortunately :(

Take them out for a trip over to Leeds and you could make that 3 :D

Angela wants an estate to replace her car at some point, going to have to look at turbo diesels I think! :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I've had a look at the 535d and to be honest it is way to big for me! I thought the Aristo was big but the 535d is even longer and wider. The best car for me would be a 335d but that is way out of my price range at the moment, so I am going to stick with what I have (which I can't complain about!) :D
