Homer
I've been recommended by an LS* engine specilist to use either a Motec M800 or Emerald ECU to run it. The M800 I know is a very capable ECU, but had not heard of the Emerald before. Does anyone have any experience with these? I was "Highly recommended" to stay away from the AEM, Link and anything Japanese!
JamieP
I take it that was Mark, he slated the AEM/Link etc to me, why not stay with the stock ecu, its a pretty capable ecu from what i hear, best place to ask the question would be in the HSV/Monaro section on pistonheads, a few guys on there know there stuff with the mapping. Homer
Thanks Jamie, yeah, it was Mark. He said he could also remap the stock ECU to my needs, but said an aftermarket one would be a better option for longer term especially considering the future head changes and SC. Good point about the other forums, I'll try and get a bit more info and visit PH and LS1tech.
Ryan.G
I have an emerald coming for my F27 IIRC correctly it only has 3 ignition outputs so you will have to run the LS engine wasted spark but wont be a problem. Has the ability to store 3 maps internally which is nice. Ryan

JustGav
What is wrong with a megasquirt ? (Just an honest question before Ian C flames me with the Maplin comments )

JustGav
My first ECU http://www.whittierelectronics.com/Pictures/Ep-50L.gif hahaha, very funny Seriously though, they have come a fair way these days, and the options with things like CAN bus and the like really appeal, it also had on the cards an automatic gearbox controller which by looked promising for interfacing with the toyota A340E. garethr
One of Emerald's owners is Dave Walker of Cars and Car Conversions fame (and, latterly, of Practical Performance Car). http://www.emeraldm3d.com/ Edited May 21, 2008 by garethr (see edit history)
Thorin
I have an emerald coming for my F27 I was just about to write that they seem popular with the Kit car crowd.
Ryan.G
It was pretty much the only option as the triggering config on the black bird is not supported on any of the other ecu's i use. Will let you know what i think of it Daryl Ryan
ManwithSupra
My first ECU http://www.whittierelectronics.com/Pictures/Ep-50L.gif I used to have that !! The exact same model lol
carl0s
I'd like to learn this sort of stuff. I wonder if I should buy an old V12 or V8 BMW 7 series and try to learn on that, with a megasquirt?
Chris Wilson
Emerald is not really in the same league as Motec, and Megasquirt is still very much for those that like the electronics side of playing with engines. Other ones to consider are MBE and DTA. DTA is very capable, UK made and supported, and plenty of people can map them. http://www.dtafast.co.uk

I do like the X-dash as well. Any idea on rough pricing?
Chris Wilson
Not sure, Motec man myself, or EFI Technology. DTA used to be very reasonably priced, is this not on their web site these days? You see DTA ecu's on some of the race car sites, second hand, maybe worth watching a few for a while, or post in a wanted ad? I hear a lot of good things about Life ecus these days, but there's not a lot of info on them that I have found.
JustGav
Just had a look on ebay, and the S80 was going for £900 and the S40 was £550, so I'd hazard a guess at mid way for the S60. Seems pricey....
