miko_supra
Ok my insurance company have written off my beloved 306 td after someone drove into the back of it last month. They haven't offered me a price yet, but realistically im probably going to have around £1500-£2000 to spend. Just wondering what people can recomend I'm going to be using it daily, doing allot of town and motorway miles. For my money i'm not going to get a newish diesel and from my experience with the 306, old diesels are gutless and the mpg return isn't amazing, and especially with diesel prices being considerably higher im fine to get a petrol car to replace. So reliable, cheap to insure, cheap tax, 35+ mpg, people aren't going to laugh at me in it, and maybe a little bit fun to drive if thats not asking too much (The pug 306 made me want to give up driving)

Maybe not so economical mind Well you can bin economy and cheap running costs with that Honda parts are not cheap as with Toyota ones.. I have to say although they are boring, Ive owned several Ford Mondeos and they are superbly reliable cars in my experience. They did the job I needed from them at the time. To drive, loaded to the gills with tools quite often and for quite long distances.
turbonut
Yaris reliable, great mpg, surprisingly roomy lots of leg and head room. 3 and 5 door. The 1.0 is a little sluggish (0-60 in a bout half hour ) but there's a 1.3 petrol and the 1.4 diesel is the same block they stuffed into the diesel mini. Seen petrol models going for £2,000 for a 2000 reg 1.0L Or a corolla, dull but bullet proof, range of engines. You'll die from boredom before it falls off the road but depends what you want to stuff into the car - missus/kids/dogs etc. if you were ok with a hatch before and it still suits...... AlexM
Nissan Primera GT? I'm split between hunting for a hatchback or saving the pennies for a high mileage Mazda6 hatch (I REALLY want a Mazda6, but the Primera ticks all the boxes).

Linda x bit too girly for my liking . and yeah i really dont want a boring car again. Just got a call and i have been offered £1850. which is better than i had expected, so that's basically my limit, might push to £2000
redtwinturbo
Nissan Primera GT? I'm split between hunting for a hatchback or saving the pennies for a high mileage Mazda6 hatch (I REALLY want a Mazda6, but the Primera ticks all the boxes). My mate had a Primera GT and apparently his used to drink juice like it was going out of fashion so not sure if it will make the 35mpg+

Honda's have to be literally one of the cheapest "import" options to work on because of the fact their parts are so cheap. Please save yourself the trouble too and don't debate this fact because you're talking to a Honda owner and tuner. I'll simply list same parts in compare them to Toyota parts and dump cold reality down your throat. ANYWAY! Get the Honda man. Easy to work on, cheap to fix, and if you're talking MPG then look no further. Though you could get a car that might have more MPG but you said a car which no one would laugh at you so Civic is the last respectable option in my book. If you look at the npoc forums they're generally getting 35mpg average, 25mpg around town and up to 48mpg on the motorway! I've looked at a fair few reviews of them and they all say the petrol engine is rather economical..

miko_supra
right ok, i think a honda civic 1.5 vtec ticks all the right boxes for me. Reliable, insurance is only £40 more than the 306, 40+mpg, probably allot more enjoyable to drive, lower tax band anyone owned one or know anyone that owns one?
