Dnk
Basicly as the title says really, im looking to buy a new car as a daily driver so want something to combat the silly fuel prices and sencible rd tax, something like an 05 reg. What would you buy to get the best mpg and sencible rd tax cost ? Ive been looking at Audi A4 Avant 2.0 Tdi or the A3 2.0 Tdi, is there anything with street cred in petrol form that would be a better buy. The 2.0 Tdi Audis do between 38 mpg and 50 mpg rd tax group D i think.

The Raven
C3 HDi 50+ mpg 35 tax a year lacks street cred
Lucas
I think the polo TDI as silly MPG and very cheap tax. Street cred could be in question

Not sure i could deal with a citroen on the drive even if it did 50 + mpg, very tempting though and would cut my fuel bill by 70%
grahamc
Top gear did a review on the 1.4 tdi VW lupo Clarkson was getting decent MPG on the trip around the M25

outatime
There has been a couple of tests in Auto Express lately on low emission/tax cars: 'Clean Machines' 'Tax Busters'
ivan
If you want a decent car that's also a tax buster, you need pre '01 plate.

miko_supra
yeah i'd be interested to see what everyones verdict is on this. My peugoet 306 td is getting only 40-45 mpg and i'm paying £200 tax!
Guest mattsupra
ive got a lupo show car done 47k loads spent on it selling for £2500 and this thing goes forever on little fuel and road tax is cheap as chips (well nearly lol ) being a 1ltr its great for cheap motoring matt
SUPRASUZUKI
My other half has an '05 Clio 1.5 Turbo Diesel - £35 tax, 65mpg. Goes well, towed 2 bikes on a trailer to the Ring and did 2 laps while there. Gave 50mpg towing the bikes at a steady 80mph too.

stevie_b
Thanks lol Oh forgot to add it must be an automatic !! I think the Smart has an automatic gearbox with the option of changing gears yourself (tiptronic?). It's drive-by-wire so you can either change gears yourself or let the ECU decide when to do it. I think it has the world's smallest mass-produced turbo'd engine.
RedM
What about the Audi A3 1.9 TDI e? Very low emissions and exempt from the Congestion Charge in London!

Dnk
Think i'll revise the question to best mpg, best street cred, and low tax. As much as i want to save money on both tax and fuel and do my bit for the planet im prepared to lose a bit of economy for street cred Think either the A4 sport Avant or A3 sport look good and dont give the impression your being tight but higher tax and lower mpg compared to the Clios C3's Smarts etc The Citroen C3 1.4 Hdi does 50-70 mpg but lacking in looks to say the least

Think i need a 4 seater to be honest and not sure i'd feel very safe in a Smart on the M-Way Ignore me, just found this didnt know they did a four seater, 51-74 mpg ! 68 hp, 100 mph. 14 sec 0-60 lol
