rechargable batteries not working?

spent £30 on a uniross charger designed for nimh rechargable batteries.

bought 4x AAA duracell 800 nimh batteries costing £15

now, i have a new mini car mount camera, but something isnt right with these batteries. i get more filming from standard alkaline batteries.

i charged them prior use, and never really worked well with the camera, they can switch it on, just no juice to start the filming function.

the charger says batteries are compatible if the green light flashes and not if its red, they are green.

what a waste of money,

help:(

Nimh batteries have a slightly lower voltage around 1.2v compared to alkaline 1.5v... so it does add up, 4.8v compared to 6v. The camera might have an internal 5v regulator which means it has some losses over the 6v to get to 5v, whereas 4.8v can't be bounced up.

think charger was 1hr charge.

thing is 1.2v nimh batteries say equal to 1.5v alkaline

i dont know any 1.5v nimh batteries

They provide slightly more wattage over time, however alkalines by their own chemical nature generate 1.5, whereis Nicd and nimh operate at nominal voltage of 1.2v for a long time. The problem is CMOS kit requires 5v (which is probably what your camera is)... Initially with a full charge the NIMH's will push around 1.4v, giving 5.2v which will provide you with the 5v for the camera, however once they settle down to the usual 1.2v, the resulting 4.8v is not capable of driving a 5v CMOS :)

Does that help?

it does, but i wanted to use rechargable ones. as cant spent £4 on batterys each time to run over 1hr to 2gb sd card

An alternative is to build a microbattery pack with 5xNIMH batteries and a 5v regulator (If it has a 5v input that is)
