Dump valve noise..... (at idle)

Hi all.

heres the situation. This is a pic of my engine bay:

image

The problem i am having is that air is constantly coming out of the small holes on the dump valve (small holes on the gold plate in pic)

At the same time there is a slight ticking sound coming from the RHS of the engine (facing engine)

When i fold the blue pipe going to the dv the ticking stops, air stops coming out of the holes and the engine idles lower.

does this sound normal? or do i have a problem

My dv also makes about 3 different kinds of noise which i didnt think they were suppose to. One at low revs, at about 3-4rpm a fluttering sound and a different like woosh when flooring it.

Any input would be great thanks!

this it a typical problem with this type of dump valve, the only way around it that i know of is a stronger spring, but this has knock-on affects that are not always good

this could be the fuel injectors they tick faster (or correctly louder) as the revs increase

an air leak sounds like it could be the diaphragm(sp?) in the dump valve has a split (also common to these valves im afraid:()

i think you have a dodgy dump valve there mate, the differing sound will be because of the leaky diaphragm in the dump valve, it cant open the valve far enough at lower boost, and the wooosh would be roughly what it sounds like

EDIT: take the dumpvalve off and blow in the bigger end should be the 20mm input, you should not be able to blow through, then suck on the vacuum connection (i sooo wanted to say nipple :p) again you should not be able to suck any air through, maybe a little but then nothing, i recon you will be able to suck through continuously,

hope this is of help to you;)
