SBDJ
Morning all... My diff oil light has come on this morning from cold, I've jacked the car up in attempt to check the diff oil level, but some muppet has destroyed the filler bolt on the diff - it's completely rounded off, and it looks like they've had a go with a chisel too. I've applied some heat and tried to get it off without success Any suggestions? Regards, Scott

SBDJ
OK, What else could cause the diff warning light to come on from cold?! Level is fine...
Chris Wilson
It's a diff excess oil TEMPERATURE light, so if the car has stood and it's on it's either the sender in the diff casing, or the wiring. The filler is an in hex female plug.
JustGav
Dodgy wiring? dodgy sensor? Have a look in the service manuals for what the sensor should output at various levels.
Chris Wilson
The sensor is bi metallic switch, it's state is either open or closed. Just disconnect the plug from it, if the light goes out get a new sensor.

Ah fair enough, wasn't sure if it was an analouge one or if it was just a normal therm-switch (Learn something every day )
SBDJ
Disconnected the plug from the sensor, no change, light still on. Shorted the pins on the plug, still no change, light still on... I don't suppose you know where these wires run back to, so I can test them with a meter? Regards, Scott
SBDJ
Problem solved, found the cables from the temperature sensor run up into the boot, and the plug in the boot under the carpet had become unplugged Simple things first eh
Chris Wilson
I remember now, the switch is NC, so unplugging it should cause the light to go *ON*. Therefore a break in the wire will illuminate the warning light. Glad it was such a straightforward fix
