Gazboy
Or at least that's I always thought. Hard hitting adverts like that would be welcome on my TV if it ultimately makes some 17 year olds chavs slow down a bit I just wish the ditherers and the Anti Destination League would just be more aware of their surroundings, use a bit of forward planing and concentrate on the task at hand. marbleapple
My current 'pet hate' advert is the Drench one with Brains from Thunderbirds in it... i kinda liked it.... it does go on for a long time though! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorway Your relying on Wiki for an arguement? Your joking right?...... Please tell me your joking? As for thinking quick enough, are you suggesting people who are in MENSA should be able to drive twice as fast as those are are not part of the club? jamesmark
The motorway limit came about from one of two things, can't remember which out of these two though: In the 70's a lot of people were still going as fast as possible in dense fog on the M1 so a tempory 70 limit was put in place and deaths plummeted so it was rolled out nationwide. Or In the 70's due to the oil crisis a 70 limit was imposed to save fuel and was never listed. I can't be bothered to google the answer. It was rumoured also the AC Cobra being driven at high end speeds that resulted in the speed limit too. I don't know if this was the exact cause though. ivan
http://www.speedlimit.org.uk/index.html Q: When was the 70 mph motorway speed limit introduced in Britain? A: The 70 mph National Speed Limit was introduced as a temporary measure in December 1965. It is often blamed on Barbara Castle, but at the time the Minister of Transport was Tom Fraser. The reason given was a spate of serious accidents in foggy conditions, but it is often claimed that the MoT had been alarmed by AC Cars testing their latest Cobra on the M1 at speeds up to 180 mph. It was confirmed as a permanent limit in 1967, by which time Barbara Castle (a non-driver) had become Minister of Transport. There was surprisingly little debate at the time: the fact that the average family car of the time could only just exceed 70 mph perhaps had something to do with this. It should be noted that this limit applied to all previously "derestricted" roads, not only motorways.
hogmaw
The fact that the stopping distances haven't been changed since the 70's makes me wonder though. ABS, tyre technology and road technology have came miles since then. Most cars can stop in half the claimed distances. 'Most cars' yes, but what about the many older cars that still have shoddy brakes that are still on our roads. Heavily laden lorries too also have longer braking distances, and they are the things most likely to cause damage in an accident situation. It's all about SAFE SAFE SAFE and our government and society in general is hell bent on providing 'safety' for everyone and everything. There is no room for taking your own chances any more, everything has to be done for the common safety of everyone else.

tbourner
but none of those ads has anything to do with speeding (as in travelling faster than the speed limit)...... None of them do, the same as that bloody annoying advert with the girl up against a tree! Who on Earth thinks that down that particular road anyone could be hit at 40mph!! Even if someone was travelling at 40 in the 30 zone, would they not brake when a girl steps out in the road!!! I'm sure they'd be doing a lot less than 30 by the time they actually hit her!!!! And what's she doing running out into the road when there's a car doing 40mph down it anyway!!!!! Don't they teach these kids the green cross code anymore!!!!!! Oh of course not, just blame the driver instead, much easier than trying to get common sense into todays youth!!!!!!!
Gazboy
It was rumoured also the AC Cobra being driven at high end speeds that resulted in the speed limit too. I don't know if this was the exact cause though. It's a nice urban legend of the AC Corba Daytona getting ready for Le Mans with a 190mph run and most people do think that was the reason, fortunately it wasn't 'Most cars' yes, but what about the many older cars that still have shoddy brakes that are still on our roads. Heavily laden lorries too also have longer braking distances, and they are the things most likely to cause damage in an accident situation. There is no room for taking your own chances any more, everything has to be done for the common safety of everyone else. How many older cars cannot out perform a Ford Anglia in a brake test? It's only the really big older SUV's. If the limit was raised to 100 then surely it would be graded, say anything over 2000kg would be limited to 70 or 80? 3500kg limited to 70, 5000kg limited to 60? I'd also propose any limited vehicles would or should be banned from lane 3+ on motorways to you do not have miles of frustrated drivers caught behind some t*at in lane 3 at 70mph. On a related note imo HGV drivers overtaking a fellow HGV travelling 0.1mph slower, needing 4 miles to do an overtake ought to be fined £5000 and charged for obtruction. I don't care if they are bored of reading the back of The Big Green Parcel Machine, they either over take quickly or don't do it at all. I can't speak on their behalf but I remember saying a similar thing before and having a reasonably calm discussion with a couple of truckers about it. Basically If you did their job you'd understand, it's all about keeping up your momentum to save fuel and time, trucks unfortunately have different abilities, so you'll find one will overtake on the flats then the other will come back on the hills etc. Lifting off and sitting behind the slightly slower lorry is not in their best interests, especially not to shave 30 seconds off a few car drivers trips!! Regarding inclines/abilities, totaly agree and did see this first hand when joining the M25 @ j19 a week ago, yellow truck pulls out to overtake red truck, in 1/2 mile manages to gain 100 feet and the nose of yellow truck is level with the leading edge of red truck's trailer, but now they are at the top of a hill, red truck is quicker and gains back most of that 100 feet in the next 1/2 mile. Oh no! Now we are going up hill, yellow truck pulls slightly ahead of red truck, but not enough to pull in, oh no! Top of hill! Red truck now undertakes yellow truck, they are both neck-a-neck at the bottom just passed j17, 1/4 mile later. Uh Oh! Another hill but only a shorty and yellow truck gains little. Next is a 4 mile flat and straight stretch, yellow tuck just pulls a decent lead when we get to the top of the decline that goes under the chiltern rail bridge, redtruck gets to the bottom of that hill first. Bottom of that hill, yellow truck still in lane 2, I give up even trying to get to lane three and am now directly behind red truck, we begin the slow drag up towards the M40 and yellow truck overtakes red truck again, as I leave at j16 they are still together in their 56mph drag race. Now the red truck could have lifted for a few seconds, yellow truck could have done a quick overtake and buggered off into the sunset.
