Adzys straight6
Hey guys Iv currently got a 1996 j-spec TT, with a kakimoto exhaust on, problem is its blowing some where along the system so im thinking of getting a new full system from MIJ in walsall...i want to completely de-cat it to obviously gain a bit more power however when i mentioned a restrictor ring to them to hadnt got a clue...they seem a good garage and are a GTR and jap specialist but i was a little concerned they werent aware of this...what are the complication of not using a restrictor ring?? is it dangerous? Iv got a HKS EVC IV boost controller. Advice please!!!
Pabs
Without a restrictor ring you'll be boosting to silly levels - not safe for the turbos and you'd be replacing them pretty quickly afterwards. Perhaps try a different garage that know (in particular) Supra's better - I know I'd want someone who knows the cars well to work on mine! TurboBrett
the restrictor ring will stop it over boosting till it goes bang, the boost controller can only increase boost over its maximum. With a full decat and cat back system that base (maximum) boost pressure without restrictor ring will be over 1.2 bar and that is considdered the max 'safe' boost on stock twins Most supe's dont show an increase in power over about 1.1- 1.2 bar its alot safer and what most owners do is restsrict ring it to 1bar and boost controller it up2 what they want (1.2) Edited May 13, 2008 by TurboBrett (see edit history)
Adzys straight6
umm that makes a lot more sence now! in theory then where on the exhaust would the ring go?? near the 1st decat so to speak?

I agree with Turbobrett. I just had mines fully de-catted today and was advised to put the RR in the between 2nd cat and exit (the 1st flange in from the open end) but Nige has his at the manifold end. It seems to me it`s an either or for the RR. Both seem to work. I`m now getting about 0.9 bar stock boost which is all I want. I can crank it up a bit when necessary. hadyn
Hi Dave, You can get a restrictor ring from traders on here such as Envy, Whifbitz and Chris Wilson
bigbloodyturbo
i'm about to put both decats in and have already got a nurspec. I got a RR from envy a couple of weeks ago however its a 1.2 bar RR, doees anyone have any problems with it overboosting during the colder winter months as i read this and didn't know you could get a 1 bar RR. I`d imagine it`s VERY possible to overboost fully de-catted mate but cannot say from experience. If you have a boost controller prolly best to swap for a 1 bar RR and control it from there. Remember, you can`t turn boost down (below stock) but you can always turn it up.
