SIMON LC
Ok by my calculation the widest tyre I can get on my 9.5J rim is 285.I have noticed that for some strange reason 285 tyres are twice the price of a 275 and 295 tyre. Why is this,I would of thought 295 would be mega money but a decent continental is about £120ish as oppose to £210 ish for a smaller 285.Has anybody squeezed a 295 tyre on a 9.5J rim,and if so can you get away with it? SIMON LC
Yeh looks like 285 the widest. But why are they so much?
Chris Wilson
It's an unpopular size. It'll really wreck the handling putting the widest tyre on any given rim size, the sidewalls become very unstable and the car feels nervy as the sidewalls flex instead of planting the tread firmly. Chris, What about traction off the line & down the strip? Would a 285 Toyo R888 still outperform a 275 Toyo R888, on a 9.5" ?? I was about to order a set of 285 due to massive lag of traction, but now I don't know
Guest mattsupra
ive got 275 on mine and 255 on the other set of 19"s i have just taken off
Chris Wilson
R888 is a track tyre, and needs heat to work, and is biased to lateral grip, not hooking up off the line. If you are into the drag stuff you need specialist drag tyres. I would also say you'd be better off spending the money on drag dampers and springs, and a spool LSD, although it would be dire on the road. Guest KDW
My car is primarely a streetcar! But I do enjoy the strip on weekends. no glue, pure asphalt. I short, I'm looking for a "street" tire with maximum grip when doing drag. I don't care about long lasting or anything like that. What would you recommend? BTW, I always heat the tire before going down the strip.

Sure a 295 will go on a 9.5 J rim have ran these on an Audi S8 for over 2 years....have just tried a 305/30/20 too and it still ok and tyre wall and rim look in a good relationship neither bulging or stretched best price was £156 for the 305 using Oponeo but for a Supra you will need to check your offsets and clearances at both full lock and full suspension dive. Vredestein Ultrac Vorti make tyres in these size ranges and a great tyre at a great price

Thank you for the input all the same, and welcome to the forum.
