How open should a thermostat be at 82 degrees?

Hi guys,

Been having some temp reading problems of late (see here http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=148556) and decided to fit a new temp sensor to see if that sorted it (start with the easiest thing and all that). Well, it didn't:rolleyes:

So I've removed the thermostat to see what was what. It was fully closed when I took it off and I put it in water and heated that up to check its operating temp (meant to be 82degrees). At 82 it started to move very slightly, and at 88 there was a gap between the rubber and steel parts of approx 1mm. Normal?:search:

I turned off the heat and left it in for a few mins and it continued to open to a gap of 4-5mm.

Is this normal behaviour? Or is it slow to open and close? And would this cause the symptoms in my previous thread??

Taaaaaa for your input in advance, as always!

manual says that at 95 degrees the stat should be open 8.5mm or more..............so leave it in a bit longer and see if it makes it!?

Well, a set if Vernier calipers set to 8.5mm slide snugly into the gap at 95 degrees.

I assume that this means the stats working correctly?

Yup.

The stat sounds ok.

Sounds more like a problem with the actual temp gauge or the wiring to it.

You could wire in an independant temp gauge and see if its reading correctly

If it does then get those wiring diagrams out and get the dash binnacle removed :D

Smelly(colourblind)welshman+wiring= :bang:

I'd fit a new stat anyway, they are notoriously fickle to check, as in real usage they are under pressure and may act differently to in a saucepan.

I was thinking this.... And for the price of them I might as well completely rule out the thermostat as the cause. Got to order a new gasket for it any way!

Tricky little bugger to get out aren't they, my wrists just dont bend in the right places!! Had to take the alternator off in the end!!
