CarlT67
My girlfriend is quite into her photography and wants to take the step up from a compact to an SLR, she is looking at the Nikon D40. This seems to be ideal for the step up and seems to have all the features necessary without an extortionate price tag. Does anybody have any knowledge of SLR's and this model in particular...? Wez
I have a canon 400d with a couple of lenses, works really well, can pick the 400d and 350d up at a nice price now as the newer models are out. Out of the box I found the nikon units seem to produce better colour but you can increase the saturation on the canon so its no biggy. ChrisB
I bought the d40x not long ago, have a play in a camera shop with the canon and the nikon, i prefered the feel of the nikon, its going well so far im finding it easy to use
robin
I have used the 400d and 350d canons. Both are very capable cameras. I don’t think it is worth spending too much over £500 unless you are a professional or a serious enthusiast. The extra money would be better spent on a posh/better lens. The newer 450d comes with a better image stabilised lens but unless you are in very low light camera shake shouldnt be an issue anyway. So I would look for a cheaper SLR camera and spend the resnt on a nice lens. What is it she is planning to photograph with it? I just bought myself a nice sigma 500mm lens last week: D
DamanC
350d user here. I would recomend a 350d, 400d or the D40. All very good 'starter' camera's.

Guest DevilsAdvocate
I've had a Canon 350D for some time now and find it easy to use in basic mode ( more inportantly Kaz can work it too ). Also plenty of options in the 'creative' modes. Its now been superceeded by the 400D which in turn (I think) has also been superceeded. So there should be some bargains around. colsoop
What kind of photography does she enjoy ? Be warned though buying an SLR is just the start, you can get away with a kit lens for a while to get used to how it all works but sooner or later you will want a new lens or 2 then tripods then battery packs etc etc. It does mount up quite quickly so bear that in mind. I have a 350D which is a good little unit and served me well. The canon or the Nikon are both good with lots of lens' available depending on your needs. Look for cash back deals or offers, go in to Jessops and get a feel for the camera you like best then look for a cheaper source online. Amazon tend to have a few offers now and again. (and pics of my car;)) We have managed to find a good deal already for the D40, and its up to her if she wants to go forward and buy more accessories. robin
For night images you would idealy need a tripod and a stabilised lens will help, although you can get good results without stabilisation. Depending on how far away the animals are and how big they are you might need to invest in a telephoto lens. If its birds and rabbits etc then you need 300mm minimum and idealy more.
