Bryan_Jones
Now I have a serious problem :( I was accelerating away from a junction and my engine went bang! Immediately the engine management light came on and the hazard warning in the middle of the rev counter. Now the car won't rev over 2k else it cuts power completly, but doesn't stall. The engine sounds lumpy on tick over. Does it sound like one of the Turbos has gone? I knew it wasn't right. In this post: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=149510 But now I think it's game over How much would it cost to replace the turbos? (if that's what it is) I have it booked in at Toyota in Bournemouth tomorrow morning to see what the issue is. Might look elsewhere for parts and fitting. Homer
It sounds like an intercooler pipe has popped off, it's very common, but scares the hell out of you the first time Is there any black smoke from the exhaust?
Bryan_Jones
No, there's no smoke. Which to be honest I was expecting if the Turbo had gone.
Bryan_Jones
Where is the intercooler pipe? As soon as I know I'll go and check it out.
Homer
Have a really good look around the IC pipes, especially those around around the the intercooler itself. Do you have an aftermarket IC?
SteveR
Where is the intercooler pipe? As soon as I know I'll go and check it out. one pipe goes from the turbos into the driver side wing -intercooler- then the other one heads acros the front of the car and up then into the engine. michael
No joy Took off the cover in the wheel arch to look at the intercooler. It's definately on there good and solid. How about the pipes running across to the other side of the bay? Have you followed the full run to check for popped hoses?
Bryan_Jones
I think I'm going to need to. I'm going back outside now to have another look.
Jurgen-Jm-Imports
Where is the ignitor pack? Is there something I can look for? its located on the strut top of passenger inner wing (engine bay).. little black box.. you need to borrow one to test it takes 2 mins to remove thinks its 2 clips and x3 10mm nuts
Ric
hose doesent have to have popped off, could be a split hose, remove them all and check them
Bryan_Jones
The hoses are big. I didn't manage to get back outside as I've been very busy taking calls for my business. So am I checking the 2 large pipes or other small ones? It's quite dificult to see. If I start the engine will I hear any noise coming from the pipe if it's split? Please excuse my stupid questions, but I'm trying to learn
Stevie72
My Intercooler went when i first bought mine and the engine went into Limp mode and wouldn't allow me to go above 2,000 rpm. Mind you mine was bellowing black smoke and you could hear the air blowing out when revving.
dini_the_owl
suprise...i would have thought you would be able to rev over 2k with a split/disconected ic pipe?
Jake
Blown off intercooler pipes, while quite common on Supras running above stock boost, do not cause the engine to not be able to rev above 2000rpm. I've blown IC hoses several times and managed to drive home on the motorway just fine. (Not a great idea though as the engine is ingesting unfiltered and unmetered air) Start by reading your error codes and report back. - - - - - Edit to add: shouldn't "error codes" hyperlink to the explanation? Or don't we do that anymore?

Isn't that only on VVTi Supras? (due to the FBW)

Homer
Edit to add: shouldn't "error codes" hyperlink to the explanation? Or don't we do that anymore? Good point, it should. There were some problems with the hyperlinks mentioned before, reported for Mawby to take a look...
Chris Wilson
Down the side of the battery nearest the middle of the car. It may not LOOK as if it's blown apart, but serious tugging and messing may well show the rubber to vertical plastic pipe union is no longer fully intact. Alex
The 2000rpm thing could be due to a lack of available air due to the pipe fault.
AndrewOW
The same thing happened to me after some work was done on my car. It sounds terrible, but it was only one of the intercooler pipes popping off. Luckily I was on my way to the garage at the time, so they tightened it all up and haven't had a problem since. Well I hope that's all it is for you, as second-hand turbos and fitting them isn't particularly cheap! As I know full well
