Exhaust rattle

My exhuast has had an annoyed high pitched rattle for a while at a certain number of revs. Thanks to Yorkshire's impressively bumpy roads, the rattle got 10x worse just before I arrived at the 10 of the Best. Looking up inside it, the back box (or rather back pipe) seems to be full of wadding which is held back by a thin wire mesh (more sheet metal with many holes than mesh). This mesh is very twisted up and I'd assumed it was that rattling, but actually it looks like an internal baffle at the back has come lose. I'm guessing this was welded at two points, the first broke some time ago and the second came away when I hit a rather large bump on the way yesterday. It's probably best pictured via a cross-sectional drawing:-

My question is what to do about it. The mesh is in a right state with wadding protuding. Presumably remove all that would make the car sound awful? How could I get the internal baffle reattached? Or would removing that be okay? It's not a common exhaust (made by 'Bullet'), and I don't really want to fork out for a new one.

Many thanks in advance.

It was on the car when imported, so no luck there. And it's already loud enough to disgruntle old people, make kids cry and very possibly raise the dead, so I'm not sure I want it louder! Just sans annoying rattle... :(

Think I'll see if I can get the internal restricting baffley thing welded to the outside pipe. Quite why it's in two separate parts when, because they have the same bore, it's impossible to remove, I don't know.

Perhaps a stiff letter to your highways department, and a photo of a local, big, gouged speedbump "that you hit at only 15mph" would finance a replacement.

Only trouble is, it will take about 2 years.

My cat pipe, shroud thingy rattles at low revs. I can't think of anyway to wedge it without burning the material I'm wedging with.
