No 'fancy pants' computer controlled avionics or softy big girls gas turbine keeping this one up in the air, just a 27 litre V12 in a world beating airframe.

mmmm:):):)

seen spitfires flying overhead, they are so characterful and suprisingly maneoverable. And the sound is very very nice. :)

SEX

One of the reasons we won the Battle of Britain......... Engineering at its finest in its day

An even match in the air with Willi Messerschmitt's Bf109, but the 35 litre normally aspirated inverted V12 Daimler-Benz is a bit 'Status Quo' compared to the Spit's supercharged 'Metallica' R-R Merlin.

Soo

Wonder how many times the pilot was doing that run towards the camera and had his thumbs pressed down doing an imaginary straffing run ... I know I would be :D

The two Hispano 20mm cannon in the mk.IX wouldn't leave much opportunity to recover any surviving film in the unlikely event of any survivors. Shame they weren't fitted to the Mk I in 1940 (the wings would have broken off if they had though)

My thoughts as well.... you wouldn't want to have been a german on the deck watching that coming at ya.

T'was a Hawker Typhoon rocket attack on a Tiger I that finished off the subject in my avatar 08/08/44

my grandad used to fly spits, he even flew in the battle of britian, had a good many stories to tell as well.

Did you know that the saying "Gave him the whole nine yards"

was refernce to the spit piolts that landed and had used an entire belt of ammo in a dog fight, it was the the length of the belt of .50cal rounds!

Anyone into warbirds really should go the the flying legends @ Duxford.

Like Psymon said, thank your lucky stars we had the Merlin.

Everying from tanks, Wellington's, Lancaster's, Mosquito's, P40s Spitfires and P-51s had Merlins at some stage

National Supra meet at Duxford then ?

Brill day out for a tenner, and central as well (except for the Welsh and the Scots, but we wouldn't want them there anyway:D)

Whats the background history about that then?

Love war stories.

No direct connection to Michael Wittmann, but grandad was in the Heer, wounded in Russia, transferred to France and captured by the Americans.
