Astra VXR

I quite like the look of them but I promised I would never have another Vauxhall after having mega reliability issues with an S reg Astra Estate and a Y Reg Vectra Sri.....

Things may have improved but I doubt it somehow!

Nah they are still rubbish. We have the entire range on fleet (except the VXR's) and they are always breaking down or playing up. All are less than 6 months old too!!! I'd rather a dose of the clap than a new Vauxhall:p

Never had a problem with my Astra. Got it brand new 18 months ago and hasn't had a problem.

As for changing the badge, JB made the most valid points....

I went in a friends one to LeMans last year. It's nice, big enough inside for 4 blokes and luggage. Turbo midrange oomph is very noticeable. Seems well screwed together, alas both the front wheel bearing went after only 20k miles which is really rather poor.

Who gives a toss about the badge? I worry about how a car pleases me, not how it pleases people I don't know.

didnt realise it was FWD, assumed it was either rear or 4WD. Not a major problem. What other options of similar class are there, only ones i can think of are the Golf R32 (last shape), Audi S3 (although not quite the same in terms of performace), Focus ST...anything else??

In terms of an all round package if i was spending that much i would consider a facelift Integra dc5, now that is a fun car to drive and what an engine, also im pretty sure it would be a damn sight more reliable than the vauxhall and possibly depreciate a lot less.

Plus consider the tax bracket as well

Just for interest - did you know that Holden has the same sort of rep over in Australia that Vauxhall has over here?

Surprised the hell out of me considering we reckon the Holden badge is OK. :)

Not to sure on brand spankers price i would speak to somebody like jurgen for the best deal.

Would prefer to stick to a UK car for insurance reasons though. I am looking into other options though so i will check them out. Also gonna look into things like A3 TDi's, Honda S2000. Want to limit the engine size to 2.0l or less i think to keep it "relatively" economical. Focus ST may be an option as well.

Just looked at the S2000 and prob just a tad expensive, and would prefer UK car. How much fun was the ST? And what was the economy like?

Ford are definitely not the badge they used to be. They have come a LONG way, much further than vauxhall. The focus has been THE best hatch since it came out bar none (ie including the VW & Audi).

People just plain don't like the badges, the quality isn't so much an issue anymore although i can't comment on the new Astra's.

Gaz,

Have you looked at the Megane R26?

Highly rated and proper quick on A and B roads. Fuel economy isn't all that though.

Hmmm prefer the Clio equivalent to be honest. Bit small admittedly but im not convinsed about the arse end on the megane. Also quite fancied the Seat Cupra K1. Its a toss up between that and the Asta at the moment, although might pay a visit to Renault this week.

I used to own 2 Mark 3 astras....

They were the most reliable cars I think I have ever owned if thats any help :)

I cant comment on the VXR though as Ive never been in one...they look nice though....and the Vauxhall badge is not a problem for most.

A Monaro is a vauxhall after all (sorry JamieP :innocent:)
