RedM
I'm with Plusnet on their, now unavailable Broadband Plus scheme. They are trying to get me to sign up to their current schemes and I can't see any benefit. Am I missing something? Current set-up. Off-peak allowance (midnight until 4pm) is 50gb / month. Peak time allowance (4pm until midnight) is just 4 gb month. Cost is £14.99 per month. The new scheme at the same price is 15gb per month with no peak/off-peak time! They use traffic management at peak times (evenings) so I never bother downloading large files as it's slower than at the weekends so to go from having a potential 54gb per month to just 15gb seems daft. Thoughts?
Guest Ian Wild
Hi RedM, I hope you don't mind me jumping in here, as I work for PlusNet and I hope I can explain this for you. There are really two major differences between the Broadband Your Way (BBYW) Option 2 account and your Broadband Plus product (which both cost the same). 1. Usage allowance and monitored time period Broadband Plus, as you say, allows 4GB of usage between 4PM and Midnight, and 50GB outside those times. However, BBYW does actually provide unmetered overnight usage (Midnight to 8AM), and we have plenty of customers doing a lot more than 50GB a month just in that time period. We have spare capacity on our network overnight that we have already paid for, which is how we can offer this. Unless you use your Broadband a lot during the day you will probably find that 15GB between 8AM to midnight is better value than 4GB between 4PM and midnight. That is certainly true for most of our residential customers. Obviously it won't be the same for everyone though, which is why we are happy to let people stay on the older product if they choose. 2. Traffic shaping At PlusNet we've always tried to be open about our traffic shaping, and have done our best to explain why we think that is a better approach than the hidden techniques of other ISPs. See here and here for some background reading on this. BBYW Option 2 has a better shaping profile than Plus, so it should run faster generally. See here for a comparison table where you can select both products and see the difference in expected speeds at different times of the day. As I say, we tried hard to make sure people have a choice about what will work best for them, but for most the new BBYW products dol work out as better value. If you have any more questions feel free to drop me an email - iwild @ plus dot net, and if you do decide to try the new product, remember we can move you back to the old one if for any reason you want to (even though it's no longer for sale to new customers). Kind Regards, Ian
RedM
Erm... thanks for the reply. I'm guessing you don't have a Supra? I'll do some maths and make a decision.
Whitesupraboy2
that is really low restriction. However if you are not downloading fiels then its fine for you. Im thinking of going to 02 broadband, £5 knocked off if you have an 02 mobile as well

Havard
I have been with Plus.net for 6 months and found their service to be excellent. Although I don't really download anything!! I take it, there are no issues with on-line gaming? May be a silly question but I am an internet numpty!! H.
heartworm
Who are you going to? Im trying o2, they have the 90 days thing if you don't like it, but as far as I can tell im well within the kind of limits that they set. As i said i download a bit, but ot a huge amount, and I do try keep it to the off peak times.

They were fine until I discovered torrents and then they started restricting my "unlimited downloads" connection because I'd gone over 4GB in one month. I left them sharpish and now use the neighbours wirelessly

Alex
I was with Plusnet for years...but left for Virgin as I couldn't get the speed or latency I wanted despite paying for a better service. ADSL sucks in this country. They charge too much for too little.
T2 MSW
Ive been with Plusnet for years and keep meaning to change to someone else as my experince with them is crap. I like you (REDM) disagree with the new cut in allowances and the fact I keep getting hassled that I could be on a better deal. And hopefully no one experiences any issues because if you do speaking to the technical support even gets you questioning yourself if your actually sure there is a fault to start with. RedM
I like you (REDM) I like you too. And hopefully no one experiences any issues because if you do speaking to the technical support even gets you questioning yourself if your actually sure there is a fault to start with. Don't even get me started. You could not get away with some of their reasons for technical problems in any other business. Disconnections caused by Xmas tree lights! Slow speeds caused by snow! It wasn't even snowing! FFS!!
Jay_vr6
Best thing i ever did was go with Freeola, its true you get what you pay for. i download stuff day and night at 8meg, its great and no traffic shaping or restrictions of any kind. but you pay between £20 and £27.99. michael
I've been with PlusNet for many years, I don't like them but I suspect I'd like a lot of the others even less so I'm scared to move. Now that they have people jumping on forums to defend them I'm even more scared, they might hunt me down!

China Man
I was going to say bad things about plusnet but that will be wasting my breath. I am with Virgin cable. Better speed at dl than any ADSL and low latency for my games
