Gordon F
I tried the Civic but just didnt really like it. Went for a Seat Leon Tdi FR in the end. Not a perfect car by any stretch of the imagination, but the engine is an absolute peach
carl0s
I would ideally have a Civic Type-R with the diesel engine. They don't make that one though So basically I want the Type-R for the interior and exterior styling. Whole point of this exercise is to minimize fuel costs so I can spend more/most of my time on the road and show my face a little bit more. I figure that'll be better for business. Can't do that in the Supra.
carl0s
There are plenty of other cars in budget. I could have an Alfa Brera 2.2 or Alfa Spider. I'm sure there are loads of others (needs to be under £300/month + vat business contract hire), but those Alfas aren't diesel. The diesel Alfas are too expensive and the petrol ones pretty poor on fuel. I'm thinking like this at the moment: Civic Type-R, minimum fuel consumption ~40mpg (56mph motorway). Civic Diesel, minimum fuel consumption ~60mpg. Diesel is 10% dearer, so I'm pretending the Type-R could achieve 44mpg for comparative purposes. I'm sure that maths doesn't work that way, but it's close enough. The problem is I am starting to think about cars for the sake of a new car, whereas the point was supposed to be low fuel costs.. I'm not sure if the price is £269 or £295 though. The site is due to be replaced with a new one but it's taking a longer than it should. carl0s
I took one of the 2.2 diesels out today for a drive. What a great engine! I was well impressed and will hopefully be going for a red 2.2 3dr s-type. It feels faster than a sequential TT auto on its first turbo, i.e. below ~3900rpm - so torquey! The settlement figure on the Supra is almost £2k less than I thought it would be (it's a shade over £3k), so everything's looking good

robin
The newer ford TDCi engines are very good. Variable vane turbo so there is pretty much instant throttle responce. But if you have a fuel pump or injector die on you that are -not- cheap to fix.
dangerous brain
LPG is the way ahead. If I intend on using my Aristo much more than I do now I will LPG that as well as my rangey.
Carl_S
I'm pondering the idea of having a new shape Civic 2.2 cdti type s 3dr diesel car. I spent ~£60 on fuel on Wednesday and Thursday combined. I could pay off the rest of the finance on the Supra and have a lease car provided to me for the same cost as the Supra's finance is costing. I'm a little bit concerned that I'll become obsessed with the idea of having a Supra again though if I got rid of it. There isn't room for three cars on our driveway, otherwise I'd probably consider keeping it as well. Part of me thinks it's going to become a proper classic sometime in the future, and it's the right colour too, so it'd be a shame to get rid, but it's a lot of money to run a car and although I'm not running out of money or anything - in fact I am clearing debts at quite a decent pace, but I wonder if I'd suddenly feel very financially comfortable if I got rid of the Supra. What would you do? you're not malnourished, keep the supra

I think I could get 6k easily and £7k or a touch more if I waited for the right buyer. It's a facelift TT in a desirable colour, in good condition with various bits and pieces added, but I don't want rid of it and Amanda will be using it for work & dropping the kids at school, which means I still get to use it when I want and she'll hopefully give the Aristo mk2 TT fantasies a rest £3k is the settlement figure on the finance for the Supra. I have to pay that so that the people who financed it will finance me something new, which in this case in the Honda, except they're leasing it instead of financing it. carl0s
LPG it man!!! What, the Supra? It costs something daft like £3k for the conversion and then you need to find somewhere for the tank, and the fuel cap.. but really it's the £3k plus not many people able to fit it properly that's a problem. Nope an 8 cylinder motor costs in the region of £2k to do. A 6 cylinder on stock tubbies should be less (ask the guy on the aristo forum he already did his aristo TT) As for the tank theres so many options these days its unreal. The dutch are now LPG'ing 1 litre motors to get more bang for buck. LPG is 56p a litre at expensive garage forecourts BTW Run around in your cheap to run supra and ferry the gang in a cheap assed volvo 7 seater. I did have a chat with the Aristo TT LPG man, and I remember thinking it was dear, but you're probably right that it's a good idea. To be honest what I'd really like to do is grab an old 7-series 5L V8 petrol engine or Toyota V8 turbodiesel engine (both like a grand for the whole car) and shove that in a Supra. Either run the Toyota V8 TD on veggie like that chappy on here who was talking about it, or LPG the BMW V8. In reality neither of those are likely to happen though Maybe fuel prices will come down over the next 5 years and my Supra will be usable again. dangerous brain
What you've got to think about is this Had you have LPG'd your car when you first bought it you'd have the money for the installation back way ago. Now remember that a lot of people like you change their car because of circumstance like yours every so many years. What if you just said well sod it this time I keep the car because I like it and spend the £2k I'd spend on buying one car and selling another on the LPG instal and keep the car I have now. Pretty much from that instant you are saving best part of 60 odd pence a litre.

It makes sense dude But we have been looking for a new car for Amanda anyway, and were looking at Celica GT-4 ST205s and other cars that might have been up to £5k, so this way we spend £3k and get to keep the Supra. I can tell her she's driving the Honda some days if I want..
dangerous brain
Volvo 940 estate chap. Get the 7 seater utterly future proof and only a grand lol. £2k LPG that leaves you £2k more for mods
