Going For A Job Interview Next Week

Had a phone call out of the blue the other day from an agency. It seems there is a Civil Engineering firm in my town that are looking for a senior structural technician/CAD manager with a view to training up the junior CAD techs.

Now I've been happy where I am for the last 4 years, but I think this offer is a no brainer.

The salary will be at least £3000 a year more than I'm on now and it's a 15 minute walk from my house so I'll save roughly £300 a month in petrol and not have to get up at 6am to miss the traffic.

So, I have an informal interview with them on Wednesday evening to discuss options and see what happens and I do appear to be quite excited about it all.

Well, I've just had the phone call from the agency, I've got the job! The salary is less than I was originally told (that was the agency trying to big it up I think), but it's still £500 more than I'm on now and I'll save £4000 a year in petrol so I'm still on a winner.

I've just got to break the news to my boss now. I know I shouldn't, but I feel like a complete bastard 'cos he's a top guy to work for, and another engineer has just handed in his notice as well, but I'd be daft to turn down a job 10 mins from home.

Don't just consider the financial aspect... I had to make a similar choice this year. Job in London, or one 4.8 miles from home. There was about £15000 difference in it... I took the one closer to home. My time is worth £15000 I figured. I get up at 8h30 to get to the office for 9, no more trains and wasting 5 hours/day on trains. Yes the cash saving on train and fuel is a big thing, but being able to get home at 6pm and have an evening without being stuck on a railroad somewhere...PRICELESS!

And I get to go home for lunch!

I'm sure he'll be encouraging, if its a step up the career ladder and your current company can't provide the equivalent for more money, its a done deal ;)

Just keep them sweet in case things don't work out with the new company. Oh, and Good Luck!!

Cheers guys. Yeah, the money thing isn't that important, it is the quality of life issue that's the big incentive. Not having to spend up to 4 hours a day stuck in traffic, being able to walk to work and more importantly it's something I've been trying to get more involved in where I am currently. I've been thinking for a while I'd like to get more involved in the training side of things and I spend a lot of time learning the software and developing better ways of working.

After the interview, it seems the boss has been working out a new role for me based on my skills rather than just using me to fill the position advertised.

I'm really chuffed and think it should be a good move.
