AlexM
I've been waiting for a push to get rid of my Punto, and the insurance quotes I received this week are it (all higher than last year ). I need a car that I can easily put my mountain bike in (perhaps removing the front wheel, if I have to!), commute to work, and nip all around the country with. Needs to have usable back seats (not necessarily when carrying a bike). I'm not sure whether to look at large hatchbacks or small estates.. want something that's a bit of fun to drive but still ecomonical and reliable - budget is £3-3.5k and insurance is a consideration (). Any ideas / opinions appreciated!

movistar
You could get a cheap focus , not bad wee cars . Yeah that....best car for your range of £££ imo as they do a 1.4 and 1.6cc for cheaper insurance.

AlexM
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/481556.htm This looks good!! H. That does look good, seems cheap for what it is? A quick scan of insurance quotes comes up at £630ish which is bearable. Has anyone tried to chuck a mountain bike in the back of a golf without removing both wheels? It just seems too small to me.. Gold Estate would probably be ok but I doubt you'd get it in a hatchback with both wheels on! H.

Volvo's are pretty good for 250,000 miles, very comfortable and very nimble, plus you should be able to get the bike in the back without folding the seats down. If your set on a Golf have you thought of buying a bike rack for the roof?

If your set on a Golf have you thought of buying a bike rack for the roof? I'm not keen on a Golf at all, just saw the 3+ recommendations of one above and wondered if there was some hidden space in there that I'm not seeing . I've looked at the Volvo V40 (I find the boxy ones a step too far down on the 'looks'), Passat, Mondeo, Focus, BMW 3-series, Mazda 6 (I wish, too expensive), and various other estate/touring size cars and made no progress at all on a decision . I need to get the bike in and out of the car without too much messing around, and I don't want to have to worry too much about parking up overnight and leaving it in the car. I've just done Warwickshire > Cornwall > Dorset > Warwickshire in the Supra and although it was great fun I can't afford to the use two or three tanks of Petrol each time I go away! Obviously there was no bike or dog in the car at the time either. bigcol - give me a practical demonstration of putting a mountain bike in an FTO without taking the wheels off and I'll consider it. If it's a particularly good demonstration I may have to video it and put it on youtube .
AlexM
I don't suppose anyone on here runs a Mazda6? Specifically the hatchback? Autotrader has shown me that I can afford one, greatest looking 'sensible' car I've ever seen .
