michael Posted May 2, 2008 Share Posted May 2, 2008 I need to use a train today, I don't do this very often, in fact I can't remember the last time I did, I'm confused National Rail Enquiries shows I have 2 options for my journey but it's strange... Train 1: Leaves my local station at 16:21 and goes to Leeds, I change to another one that gets me to my destination at 18:06 Train 2: Leave the local station at 16:21 and goes in the opposite direction to Hebden Bridge, I change to another one there that gets me to my destination at 18:06 So two trains, both leave the same station at the same time and go in opposite directions, I change at different times onto different trains and both arrive at my destination at the same time. Seems weird. What also seems weird is that it's £11.90 for a single and £12.10 for a return, it cost me less to go there in the car the other night and it was quicker (I'm going to pick a car up so obviously can't drive)... no wonder this public transport lark hasn't caught on, they don't even have a first class option! If anyone fancies giving me a lift from Leeds to Accrington tonight please shout up, I'll give you £11.90 and promise to stay quiet. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But remember, although they are cramped, slow, take longer, cost more, and are inherently unreliable, oh and hugely inflexible, you should use them. Much like buses. Tom and me go up and down the country to see each other (400 mile round trip ) and it costs about £35 return if we book 2 or 3 weeks in advance - far cheaper than £120 in petrol for me or £145 for Tom, not to mention additional wear and tear on cars that are already knocking on a bit!!! I paid £80 and I had to stand up for 3 hours. I didn't care, I had a book and was out of the way of general human traffic, but the poor old man stood next to me was in his 70s and with no blinkin seat! GRRR. But of course, the road isn't an option either, the only way out of the South has permanent roadworks until 2009. Sucks with a capital S. I was watching Back to the Future II last weekend and was surprised to learn in 4 years time (2012) we will all be driving flying cars. How cool is that! michael Posted May 2, 2008 Author Share Posted May 2, 2008 That was quite fun but I couldn't do it all the time So my train turned out to be the one that goes to Blackpool, Friday night so it was full of "common" families heading away for the bank holiday and chavs eating pasties. I managed to secure a table with a respectable lass and a dad / son combo who looked normal, turned out OK but they don't give you much shoulder room. Cost me £3.50 to get a taxi to the station, £1.50 for the train to Leeds and then £11.90 to Accrington, it cost me far less in petrol on the way home, it was quicker, I set the temp myself and I had lots more fun Another win for the car. £4.50 from Menston to Leeds return ar rush hour. Often works out cheaper buying 2 different return tickets. I did Skipton > Leeds return every day for a few years, I lived in the centre of town and worked in the centre of Leeds so it worked out cheaper then, I got a parking space on Greek Street eventually though (the car park that parks your car automatically) and ditched the trains immediately. I seem to remember that could be done cheaper by buying tickets for partial journeys sometimes. It seems like an expensive luxury to use trains yet the majority of people using them seem as though they might not have that much spare cash. Oddness. I totally agree, went to Prague just before Christmas and the public transport is amazing. You could set your watch by the buses and they ran every 10 minutes up until midnight and then they still ran every half an hour. You got off the bus and jumped straight on the underground which also ran every 10 minutes. Plus it cost about £2.00 for a day ticket for any mode of public transport. Just stay at home, lock the doors, and save the money I was a bit scared wandering around the badlands of Accrington with a pocket full of cash but there are some wonderful roads on the way back so it wasn't too bad I've sat watching that before, I think it's awesome.
