my nan is about to move out of her council house into a sheltered scheme bungalow, shes 88 and has lived in that house for about 40 years, and after time you do get a lot of discount on the value of the house if you wish to buy. she wont be able to get a mortgage at her age, so i want to buy it but i assume because im not the actual occupant i have no right to the discount even tho she is family?

You Grandmother will need to remain the named occupant on the rent book for you to get the discount, you can gather the money as the council is not concerned where it comes from. However if and sorry to say this, if your grandmother passes away with either 3-5 years then the council can reclaim the property back and they do not have to give you market value.

This is what it is like in Scotland as dealt with it many times before.
