charlton
If the water in a toilet flushes one way in the northern hemisphere and the opposite way in the southern hemisphere, what way would it flush on the equator?
marc_p
Maybe it doesn't swirl, it just goes straight down
Pig
They dont have toilets on the equator due to that very problem. The results could be catastrophic!

Snooze
Can a toilet actually be "on the equator"? The equator is at a single latitude, therefore some of the toilet would be one side and some the other, surely?

marc_p
This man holds the key to the arguement. So would the toilet do some sort of flushing frenzy if it was half and half?
Nic
If the water in a toilet flushes one way in the northern hemisphere and the opposite way in the southern hemisphere, what way would it flush on the equator? Water doesn't flow different ways in the North and South hemispheres.
Snooze
Sure it does - in the southern hemisphere water flows upwards. Thought about it and concluded that at a toilet on the equator, the water would just go round and around without going down. Defintitely.

Conrad
http://www.snopes.com/science/coriolis.asp Indeed this is true, I've been to the Equator in Quito. I also thought the toilet flushed in opposite directions so me and my mate spent our time at the equator running from side to side checking which way the water went down. We came to the conclusion they just flushed whichever way the water came out. juanchan
Ewen McGregor was showed a small simple test in A Long Way Down showing that water went in different directions on either side of the equator. Not that it was that exciting, but it worked.
