I understand where you're coming from and I've had thoughts of selling the Supra myself of recent.

I'm not strapped for cash - but I'm really starting to think what a waste of money it is as a daily driver. I already have a weekend toy though so I can't justify have TWO weekend cars.

just get a cheap banger for your drives to work.

 

The numbers don't add up. By the time you've bought something half decent, taxed it, insured it, factored in wear and tear then it takes about 7-8 months to start seeing a benefit financially. Then it starts all over again after 12 months.

I get less than that, I have two cars, a bike, live in a four story house and still have spare money. What the hell are you doing with yours? (I have no debts though)

This is why I bought a NA and converted it to run on LPG. That was nearly seven years ago. Still happy with it now even though cost of LPG has gone up 20p per litre in last three months.

 

I really wanted a tt but had just finished uni and knew I wouldnt be able to run one without getting further into debt.

 

Was talking to my boss at the time who is a proper petrol head and does weekend racing etc but said it was getting too expensive. He was running a C class AMG which he converted to LPG and was very happy.

 

So I spoke to several LPG installers who all said converting a turbo to lpg would be a problem. I love the look / shape of supra's and after much deliberation bought a NA and had it converted. To be honest I would still love to have a tt but thinking about it logically when will you ever to get to use all that power / speed. Nearly every stretch of road near me has a speed camera or too much traffic to be able to put my foot down. Soon motorways will be covered with them and the only place left to use performance cars will be track days!

 

Just to give you an idea I'm currently using my car to commute from Bham to Luton which is nearly 90 miles. I'm normally doing 90ish all the way. It costs approx £15 per trip on LPG. On petrol it costs approx £25.

 

But the LPG is only worth it if you do the mileage and / or keep the car as there is the initial install cost.

sounds like you need to go over your budget mate. cut down on the booze and fags! sounds like a cheap skate but ive seemed to cut down on goin ... bored of it a bit tho tbh.. but seriously i know people who spend easily £100 quid a weekend purely on booze and clubs etc!

Hi all,

 

Just thought Id post up about something thats on my mind a lot these days - namely the cost of running a Supra as a daily driver.

 

I use my stock TT Supra everyday to do a 30 mile round trip to work and also at weekends for pootling about. This costs me approx £200+ a month in petrol and £85 in insurance.

 

I earn 30k a year and with debts/bills etc, keeping the supe on the road leaves me VERY little spare cash at the end of every month. It feels like I am working solely to pay bills and thats it.

 

I dont think I could live without a fast car, as I tried to do the eco car thing a while back and it lasted a few months. So what are my options? Sell the supra and get something more economic to insure and run? Or howabout getting a hack to run around in and keep the supe for special occasions? Problem there is that I have very little spare cash, no savings and cannot afford at the moment to buy another car to run around in. Plus the issue of double insurance etc etc....

 

Anyone got any thoughts ideas????

 

Im in the same situation as you, except in earn less and dont have a house/mortgage...

Im in the process atm of going for a new job which is more money. I feel the same, im only working to pay the bills/car etc but when i do get more money,

im going to buy a cheap run around.

And believe me when i say this, you will save alot on petrol...My supe uses around £220 a month, if you buy a cheap run around,

you'll be looking at £70 max on petrol spending a month and thats a big saving!

I would never sell the supe, it means alot to me and i would use the supe solely for events/weekends etc...

But thats up to you at the end of the day....:)

For me it has worked, it totally depends on what people class as a 'daily beater'...but for me, in the past when Ive been short of cash and running two cars, I have bought a cheap car for about a grand. For example a mk3 escort or mk2 mondeo.

Reliable as anything, cheap as chips on parts and I do all my own servicing etc

 

Petrol costs are far less than that of a Supra, and I never care where I leave a daily beater (eg/ pub car park overnight) or get paranoid about what will happen to it.

 

Some folks are too ashamed about 'being seen' in a cr*p car like that but it doesnt bother me as I know what Ive got back in the garage :D

 

With that said though, petrol AND diesel are now so extortionate that even a 1.4 Escort is a £40 fill up..but it does last a lot longer.

 

Insurance, traders policy. Or a cheap quote from a regular insurer.

 

I think the public needs to get off their collective backside and start to really react to fuel price increases.....even if it doesnt go down in price, it might prevent further rises if the government senses national unrest.

It's a huge shame that it's becoming uneconomical to run cars like the Supra when doing high mileage. The situation with petrol and road tax is only going to get worse, so maybe it's better to enjoy it while you can!

 

If you really have to get rid of the Supra, there's still lots of fun economical small cars. I changed my Supra for an Elise which gets 38mpg instead of the Supra's 20mpg. Makes a massive difference when doing 30 miles per day!

Any figures on the present mpg?

 

What are you paying for gas per litre, it`s 40 something here,

 

and what`s performance like??

i agree

 

Since i stopped drinking as much i save a good £100 a week.

 

I just make sure i go out on the lash big style once a month if theres an event, we just had a local event and i blew nearly £140 i think it was! Still it beats doing that 4 weekends a month!

Depends what you buy. My econobox does 50mpg, costs £250 to insure, £90 to service, £105 to tax (next year it'll be £30).
