grahamc
Hi all, Just wondering what people think of the above 1600 engine? How tuneable is it? Where is the best place to start for tuning? Its in a lotus 7 replica... Supercharger might be an idea but I would like to know about other parts first. Engine - Toyota 4AGE 1600cc Twincam Gearbox - Toyota T-50 5-speed transmission Engine management - full standard Toyota injection / ignition engine management Opinions? Ideas? Scooter
It was the engine in the Mk1 Mr2 (probably amongst other things) and they had a import only supercharged version..........Fensport did a smaller/larger? pulley to up the boost to 150-180bhp.........so its tweakable with factor bits...... Muffleman
This is it mate, NO mods - it's how it left Toyota The fifth-generation 4A-GE was produced from 1995 to 1998 is the final version of the 4A-GE and has black cam covers. This engine is fondly known as the "black top" yet again features even higher compression ratio (11:1), the air flow sensor is replaced with a MAP sensor, the diameter of the four individual throttle bodies was increased from 42mm to 45mm, the exhuast port diameter was increased, the inlet cam lift was increased from 7.9mm to 8.2mm and the inlet ports were significantly improved in shape, countour and also the width at opening at the head was increased, . This revision upped the power to 162 hp (121 kW) at 7800 rpm with 162 N·m at 5200 rpm of torque.
Angarak
Chris Wilson runs a modified 'red top' 4AGE in one if his cars doesnt he? I had the 'red top' in my Corolla GTI - nice engine and never once had a problem with it (I didnt mod it though).

Chris Wilson
I have a Formula Atlantic spec 4-AGE in the red Zeus. 10,500 RPM, 205 BHP, a bit fragile, but a lovely engine, and every bit as good as a BDA, in my opinion. was toying with a turbo on it, but it's unlikely to ever happen. What is a Formula Atlantic engine? 10K rpm.... hmmm, now that sounds interesting! Is that out of the box standard or did it require loads of work? Chris Wilson
Formula Atlantic was a US single seater race series, a bit like our old F2. It's radically different from stock. Steel crank, steel rods, trick pistons, WILD cams, dry sumped, blah blah. Totally unsuited to a road car, needs 4000 plus minimum revs to even get off the line, and ticks over at about 1800 RPM. There are loads of cheap 4-AGE bit available from the US still. An Atlantic engine de cammed would be OK. this thing needs proper race fuel, too, as it has a lot of squashie (13.5 to 1) However, it uses a production block, and head, and demonstrates how much headroom was in the thing from the factory. Chris Wilson
Someone here has a clip of the red Zeus at Donington, on a track day. I had never heard the engine under load, from the outside, and was surprised by how racy it sounded

Sounds a little too rough/racey for me... 1800 idle and 4000 launch, that wouldbe entertaining on the m25 However the fact that its a production block and head gives me hope that it is a very good/decent engine to "tinker" with. Pete
The 4AGE is an excellent choice...wish I could afford to go down that route with the Tiger. RAW Engineering are the guys for these engines.

Muffleman
Well what do you know, I've just mapped a Lo-Cost caterham type car running the silver top 4A-GE and an Omex500 ecu. Revs right through to a redline of 7700 and made 153bhp. Not bad for a little 1.
