dannypunto
whilst my brakes are off the car i thought i would strip them down and clean them, ive took the rubbers of and took the pistons out, gave them all a good clean and all looks well, my question is when i put the pistons bk in, do i have to grease them or anything? to help them move more freely? thanks

Guest Guyver
I would just wipe a little brake fluid around the pistons and that's it.
dannypunto
it says use summit callld "lithium soap base glycol grease", never heard of it?
colsoop
Do you have a proper service kit for the calipers ? im guessing not if you are asking about the grease.
dannypunto
no i aint got any service kit, basically ive brought the brakes and not yet fitted, i just wanted to make sure nothin was seized b4 i fitted them, the pistons seem fine and so do the clips and rubbers so i dont see the point in gettin a refurb kit? Fargo
i stripped my new ones to have them powder coated, just used brake fluid to reassemble with.

Fair enough, just the fact that you did the hard work and stripped them down for the sake of £30 you could have fitted new seals and been sure you have a good caliper but no biggy. I just wiped a bit of brake fluid on the pistons to help them slide back home watch the fluid on the calipers paint ! I had some rust around the piston edges so i smoothed it off with some high grit abrasive paper first.
dannypunto
yeah thats what i basically done, but i didnt rub brake fluid around the pistons so i will do it all again., as for the £30 for seals, it may only be £30 but if there fine why change? They won't be fine Danny, they'll be used, seal will be worn, profile squared off a little. You have good uk brakes, give 'em a little tlc. meph137
UK spec brakes 04479-14140 Front Brake Caliper Overhaul Kit 04479-14130 Rear Brake Caliper Overhaul Kit Thanks for the part numbers - looking at the brake service manual it seems like I'm gonna need gaskets around the brake line - does these come with the kit?? I guess, does everything I need when removing the calipers, come with the kits? I don't want to take the calipers apart only to find I need some consumables I dont have! Also - what does everyone reckon to moving the car a few metres with no brakes? I guess I'd have to keep the engine off, as with no brakes and an auto box i wouldnt be able to stop very well! I could then use the park gear of the auto box to stop the car rolling, does that sound fine? I'm planning on taking my time with the caliper rebuild, going to get them powder coated I think. merckx
The overhaul kit just includes what you need for installing the pistons back into the calipers. 47389-24010 Gasket for flexible hose You'll need two gaskets for each caliper, I don't know how many you'll get in a pack at Toyota or if you need to order eight times the part number above. No problem pushing the car with calipers removed, I sometimes just put a brick or a chock a few feet infront of the wheel so it doesn't move too far and damage something. I don't think the Supra has screws holding the brake discs on the hub, so when you remove the caliper/pads there'll be nothing holding the discs in place until you put the wheels back on apart from maybe a little rust. Nice, cheers for that - do you reckon I'm gonna need anything else? Can't see that I am, seems like I'm gonna need: Brake fluid Lithium soap base glycol grase Caliper refurb kit for each caliper 2 brake line grommets for each caliper I'm thinking the process would be: Remove calipers (going to plug up the brake lines if I can to stop fluid coming out) Do my stuff with calipers Refurb calipers with kit Use grommets to reattach calipers to brake line Bleed lines to ensure no air Fill up brake fluid Sound about right? merckx
Have you removed the pads before, it's just that the long pins that hold them in place can be seized. I had to replace mine after cutting and hammering the old ones out.
meph137
Hmm, no I haven't - might be an idea to get some pins then if they are not too dear, how much did yours set you back? cheers for the advice so far
Andy Blyth
seems like I'm gonna need: Brake fluid Lithium soap base glycol grase Caliper refurb kit for each caliper 2 brake line grommets for each caliper To save you buying extra, Toyota supply the necessary grease and brake line grommets in the caliper refurb kit. (well, at least they did in the J-Spec rear refurb kit)
