Jake
For the last few days I keep getting an annoying pop-up window saying "AVG free notification" which is nagging me to try AVG Internet Security Suite 8.0 Anyone know how to turn this annoying feature off? (Apart from buying said product, natch) Cheers

Pixelfill
Wow that's a real coincidence, who would have thought it. It's almost as though it was engineered that way Sorry Jake, I haven't worked out how to stop mine doing it either. Mike
RedM
Why not just buy it, Jake? You must have money coming out of your ears by now.
Wez
Uninstall and use Avast instead.
RedM
I think recommendations are getting to be a waste of time lately. You read group tests and different mags/sites rate AV differently. I was all set to get Avast then read two reviews where it was beaten soundly by AVG and Kaspersky. Yet other reviews rated Avast really high and Kapersky low. I don't think there will ever be a must-have, do-it-all bit of AV software although I really wish there was.

Hermit
I'm gonna try installing the free version of 8.0... http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe ... have you got that installed already? It did this annoy thing a while back - it opened up a webpage that time. I can't remember if it stopped when I got a new version, or if it just gave up after a while. If a new version doesn't stop it, then I'm just going to turn off automatic updates for a week or so.

robin
Just had a look at version 8 and it’s over 45MB! I remember when AVG was about 6MB? I hate how new versions of software inevitably get larger with out really adding any useful features while running slower and slower….

I hate how new versions of software inevitably get larger with out really adding any useful features while running slower and slower…. Not only that, it's taking 50MB ram when 7.5 only used 2 !! Not a popular update... http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?12,121086,backpage=,sv= Time to find something else. Oh well, it was good while it lasted. At least loading 8.0 seems to have stopped the nags.

Thanks RedM that made me laugh I uninstalled it but for some reason I get a pop up warning me about AVG still being installed in my outlook. Can't work out how to stop it for the life of me. I hate AVG.
Willson
I'm gonna try installing the free version of 8.0... http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe Yeah that did it for me. I took me a while to find the page though! They are obviously banking on some people upgrading to the not-so-free "suite".

They are obviously banking on some people upgrading to the not-so-free "suite". Interesting. The link on the nag screen only takes you to the "suite" link. I actually had a poke around and concluded that there was no AVG 8.0 free version. Nice find!
CJ
As AVG free updates finish at the end of the month, which other program is the free AV of choice these days?
Pabs
As AVG free updates finish at the end of the month, which other program is the free AV of choice these days? I wasn't aware the free updates finish, but if they do, that's a good question!
Thorin
The updates have been extended to the end of the year now apparently. Is Avast actually any good these days then? Minimal intrusion, low memory usage, and just to scan for viruses not try to do everything else as well are what I need. Sounds like AVG8 does not fit that bill. CJ
The updates have been extended to the end of the year now apparently. I didn't realise this as i had another of the pop ups again this afternoon saying they would be finishing on the 31st.
