RedM
I'm assuming Celeron is still the base model but Centrino, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, Santa Rosa and Montevina mean nothing to me. I'm looking for a machine that'll surf the net, play music and video, do the odd bit of photo manipulation and most importantly, run Linux. michael
Is battery life a consideration or will you be plugged in most of the time?
tommygun
Hi Red M Celron was the budget end of the intel line so stay clear.Idealy you should go with core 2 basically in simple terms you can do multiple tasks at once. IE watch a video d/l play music at the same time if need be. If you have plenty of money to spend you can try buying a Montevina machine but im not sure if intel have released them to the uk market yet. If you have the budget buy a montevina based system as these support DDR3 they are also built on a 45mm core which means you have a system that uses less power. If you want better advice pop over to my pc forum http://www.clunk.org.uk;)
Pete
A Celeron will do all that you wish it to, with the exception of speedy video conversions. Might be better off thinking what your chosen Linux Distro is most compatible with?
RedM
Is battery life a consideration or will you be plugged in most of the time? It'll be plugged in most of the time. WiFi turned out to be a no-go in our flat so I might as well sit at the end of a lead.
Scott
Core2Duo is regarded as the best at the moment but, as above, i'm not sure whether Linux will use it to its potential.

RedM
I'm in two minds about this. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/302396 On one hand it's got a lovely 17" screen but, on the other, it's only Dual Core and the HDD is a tad small. Thoughts?
Scott
Thats a good size HDD for a laptop, shouldn't think you would need more. The processor is OK depending what you want to use it for. Dual core does make a big difference.
RedM
I want to partition the drive to make a Vista/Linux system. I also like my graphical bells and whistles.
Scott
I'm confident the laptop would be fine. You could go into PCrobbery and try the PC out. Pretty sure it would be setup with vista and between that and Linux, vista is enevitably going to be the slowest so if your happy with it, go for it. As for graphics, your probably looking at around £600ish to get a laptop with dedicated graphics unless the prices have came down a lot since i last looked. Theres not really a lot you can do but the dual core will go a long way to help that out. Money permitting i would be looking for... 2ghz(roughly) core2duo 2gb ram >100gb HDD dedicated graphics (depending on price) Oh just FYI vista needs around 12gb alone so 60/40 partition would be best.
