PC World: A bit good, a bit bad.

Went to PC World on Saturday to get two new HDD.

I wanted a 2.5" one for my laptop and a big internal one for the main PC.

First hurdle. PATA and SATA. I thought I just had IDE drives in both. Salesman was sure I had PATA.

Second hurdle. Would an 80gb drive work in my laptop? He seemed sure it would.

I walked out with two new drives.

First Problem. It turns out I have SATA after all.

Second problem. Laptop died.

I go back to PC World and speak to the salesman who says it'd be best if I speak to his boss.

First solution. Tells me that the 80gb laptop drive was a mistake. It might have been seen by the BIOS but wouldn't have worked properly! Don't know how true that is but he gives me a refund.

Second solution. He can't give me a 160gb SATA drive to replace the 160gb PATA one. So he gives me a 250GB drive for no extra cost instead. Result.:D

So, PC World. Haven't a clue what they are on about if there's nothing printed on the box but they are helpful at refund time.

what did you expect? The guys in pc world barly know what a pc is let alone a hdd. Not to mention their crazy 150% price hikes

Their prices weren't much different to online prices. Factoring in the 'now' factor, rather than waiting for a delivery, swayed me.

I'll be buying a laptop online though.

If god granted me one vengeful act it would be to distroy every PC World and all the retards that dwell within.

I hate PC world with an immense and extreme passion.

What type of company puts "world" in the title.

Is it a world?,... NO!! ITS A SH***Y STORE run by egotistic morons and circus freaks

The people employed by PC world dont seem to function as normal human beings.

From the rare observations I have made their social group and behavior seems more akin to feral dogs.

I have wasted so much time in that shop and never spoken to anyone that has shown the smallest amount of knowlege about anything PC related.

I'd gain more information asking my pet goldfish on computing maters.

My god, they make McDonald's staff look like brain & neuro surgeons.

Their prices are MUCH more expensive than online prices.

Check out the same drive on ebuyer.com.

it will be much cheaper.

But the 'get it now' factor can be useful. at times.

They can be reasonably priced on some things. Printers, but then that's always been the case, and erm, some other things.. what are they... I think big brand (3com, Netgear) routers can be reasonably priced.

Cables are the thing you should not go to PC World for.

PITA more like :)

I hate PC World with a passion, but I will buy stuff from there if it’s a no-brainer.

I once bought a PC World unbranded bargain basement CD ROM drive, which flatly refused to work in my PC. When you moved the drive arund you could hear something mechanical moving inside. I took it back and stood patiently in the queue for the techincal "help" desk behind a brazillion people saying "help, my PC dun't work" until I got to the front. PC World girl inspects said drive and agrees that it shouldn't sound like that when you rattle it and I could go and pick another one and bring it back to her. So I get another drive and lo and behold as soon as my back is turned she starts serving abother person, obviously expecting me to wait again to actually do the exchange. Right-ho. I plant myself beside the customer and politely but firmly inform them both that in fact I'm being served at the moment, and could they please both respect that.

Oddly enough, neither the customer nor the PC World girl seemed to see things that way, and both proceed to have a go at me. So to pass the time I go and collect ALL of ther CD ROM drives, deposit them on the desk next to the girl and start opening them all and rattling them. "No, that one's bust too….and that one…and that one…" and so on until all their stock of CD ROM drives is unpacked. Obviously, by drive 2 or 3 it had occurred to me that maybe they all rattle and this in fact has nothing to do with the original problem. After unpacking a dozen drives or so I said something like "Looks like you've got a bad batch there, love. I'll just have a refund please", and walked off. Got one from DABs the next day :)

I have a PCworld in front of my work. A few years back when i was an apprentice i used to go over at lunch just to wind up the folks that worked there.

Was great fun, i would ask them questions about the Bios, the RPM of the harddrive, clock cycles etc. Everytime i asked a question the person would go and get another person who would in turn go and get another person. At the end of it all they never got a sale. They caught on after a few weeks and finally just left me alone.

So you'd recommend them then? :D

I once (a long time ago) purchased a HP machine from them. I had just got a full time job and couldnt afford to buy a pc out right so the finace option sounded good. Picked up a copy on Unreal II the day it came out and after 30 seconds my CD drive shattered the disk. Took the PC back to be informed by the guy "Oh it was a game that did this? That would explain it they use cheap CD's....don't think I can do anything about this" I then informed him I had just spent 2 years doing a higher level education ICT course and probly more qualified than him and 99% of the staff in his shop. He then fixed it on the spot and gave me a new copy of the game!
