looking for some advise for the next one for me...

What to go for?

What type of frame?

Rear suspension?

Disc brakes?

Gear sets?

Would it be worth while building the bike up for scratch? If so which frame should I start with?

Anyone know of some good deals? Not fussed between new or 2nd hand...

cleats (spelling) and shoes... never really used these, but want to start, so which ones and do you choose? Are there different types do some work/not work with others??

400 - 500 is the budget

look at the full suspension frames... found some half decent ones.

What sort of costs would I be looking at to complete the bike, if I bought a frame only?

Type of riding is:

Off roading and downhill trails

Some road, but only short distances up to 10 miles at a time.

Where did you get yours?

that sort or rules out Full susspension. Dont buy a cheap full susspension frame, it wont last 5 mins. Decent FS bikes start at about £1k

Look at this This will be they type/spec you sould be looking at.

If possible get a bike that has a decent frame, as everything else can be changed.

another idea is to look at "own brand" bikes. halfords, make some really good bikes now, I have one as a second bike.

I have been biking for 17 years, my last bike cost me £3300 ;)

I'm currently keeping an eye out for an older 'retro' hardtail.

I haven't been keeping track of the latest equipment, hydraulic breaks and 27 speed bikes where just coming onto the scene back then..........

I'm going for 'what i know' and am after a 24 speed good quality light'ish weight hardtail with old v-brakes. For me this will be £ for £, and lb for lb come to that, a better bike than a new 27 speed disk braked hardtail.

The weight of a bike can make a big difference to your enjoyment on the trails, cause we all spend more time lugging them up hills than we do going down them.

Saying this you do need to be careful with 2nd hand frames especially aluminium ones.

again, not too bad, looks as if money has been spent on the frame, but saved everywhere else - oh, 16" only ;)

B******D!! Did not see that... Thanks!

That is basically what I am looking for, a decent frame. The other parts, so long as they are decent, can be replaced as needed, but the frame needs to be good!

i do a bit of mtb, I would say 500 quid is an ok budget for a bike but dont expect everything to be top spec, you are likely to find something has been saved somewhere.

......you could also end up spending more later on, on upgrading

to be honest with you with the money your spending i would strongly reccomend buying a hardtail over a FS. i was going to suggest the rockhopper but i see your on the case already :) if you want to know anything about the ride2work scheme give me a call on the number on the evans website as i work there and i do the r2w and corporate stuff. Can see if i could knock a small amount off the bike if im allowed lol.

happy hunting :)

I am just after a decent frame, with the rest of the parts being ok. At least with a decent frame I have the chance of changing and upgrading the other parts as I need to. hope this makes sense...
